During the period that New York City was shut down due to COVID-19, many people became ill and were hospitalized. Throughout the course of a few months I suffered from mental depression and put on 30 pounds. Despite my efforts in yoga and stretching, I was not able to overcome my depressed mental state. As I lived near Elmhurst, a neighborhood well known for the epicenter, every day I would hear ambulance sirens during the day and helicopters kept flying over our apartment every night for months, and the sound of it really interfered with my sleep.
For me, escaping somewhere where I can breathe freely was the strategy. Thus, my family and I decided to leave the area temporarily until the situation improves. My family and I spent several days camping in state parks. During our time outdoors, we spent a lot of time hiking, biking, and kayaking, which drastically improved my mental health. If my family had not been there for me, I am not sure how I would have been able to survive.
Hi Sangay, I personally can relate to you as I struggled with my health throughout the pandemic and finding ways in my household to stay healthy wasn’t easy, but not impossible either. The pandemic has changed all of our lives but making the most out of it is key to the getting the best out of it.

It must have been nice to be able to spend time with your family outdoors and have a fresh breathe of air from the chaos.
I can relate with you on the mental health issue. The sudden pandemic took a toll on me too. But instead of gaining I lost weight(which was very bad on my end since I was already skinny) and was very stressed out from school.
Excellent. Your description of the street sounds effecting your state of mind brings it all back to me, too. What a wonderful idea your family had of retreating to nature as a solution. Nature is healing.
