Assignment 1b

In today’s society, designers represents an important play role when it comes to advertising and communicating verbally or non-verbally. I think the importance of communication gives designers a chance to spread their message visually and metaphorically, if they acknowledge his or her community. In terms of theoretical questioning, designers have a responsibility for knowing how and why their techniques and/or artwork plays an important role in society.

Technology has dramatically evolve and so as it has dramatically change the ways for designers. It gives the benefit for many designers to expand their creativity and knowledge, motivating many new artists to expand their ideas and develop their own styles in terms of design. I am sure that their are many designers who are baffled by the questioning of theory and its a important consideration to understand the function and the psychological elements. Networking with other designers increases the mobility and the workflow to be more convenient when it comes to research, reference, ideas, theories, etc.

Finding a solution for a problem is a responsibility for a designer because designers are capable of identifying a problem based on his/ her environment. The importance of visual elements such as objects, color, mood, size and more is crucial because these elements affect the way how viewers identifies the big picture and their ways of identifying the message that these designers feature. A common problem that designer need to face is the lack of specification towards his/ her artwork, giving a clear meaning of their message because their are most designer today that can’t explain their artwork and when they interview for a job, it is mostly likely to be rejected. Specifying the message of the artwork is important to reassure the designer and the viewer that this display is meant focus and solve the problem, and easier enough for everyone to clearly understand its entirely.

Assignment 1a+ 1b

In Design as Art by Bruno Munari, the role of design in society is something that can light up our life. Maybe a dress that’s fashionable, an attractive vase, or a chair that fits the style of your room. What I said above is all done by designers. The role of a designer is to make aesthetics set on products, at the same time maintaining the functions. And maintaining the function is the first thing that designers should be concerned about. From what I remembered in Art History classes and what Munari wrote, maintaining the function is one of the revolutions in design. It happened in the early 1900s in Weimar. At that time aesthetics was the first thing to think of in products. It causes many product malfunctions, and people can’t afford to buy the products since the products are expensive after the design. Things such as a teacup without the bottom, a chair that you can’t sit on, engraving decorative design on normal plates. So people decided to change the mindset of design. What they did was educate designers and design students to set function as the first thing to think of rather than aesthetic. If the product malfunction after aesthetics set on it, then the design has some problems. And it would be considered as a bad design.

The role of technology changed design in many ways. Without having applications like photoshops, InDesign and lightroom design are done slowly. The way of performing design changed as well. For example, most design pieces are something that you can touch and feel with. However, with technology most things are data. A poster would be something on a screen and not on paper. Photographs are digital not on photographic paper. But because it’s on the computer it’s easier to publish your ideas, it costs less than it used to be, more ways to spread your ideas and influence more people.

I think the problem designers face today is that we don’t know what will change in design. Like what was indicated in Graphic Design Theory,  Helvetica was exposed to everybody in the 19th century, and it turns out to be one of the famous typefaces in the 20th century and most designers are using it. The second problem that I think of is designers don’t know when their design is being out of style. According to Bruno Munari, designs in old days are more toward signs and sculpture. Like what he described of blacksmith’s sign, and the range of color people use in the old days. And when the generation changes, people don’t understand what they mean, and they will not get excited or aware of it when they see it.

Assignment 1b

The role design should play in society is the collaboration of designers and the public in order to create the balance of life. By this, designers engage more with the world instead of designing for the sole purpose of authorship. It is a designer’s social responsibility to engage in their “societies politically and culturally”. Additionally, what distinguishes the field of design to other creative occupations is that the field of design is expanding because of the engagement it has globally. Its no longer restricted by certain objective communication.

Designers should concern themselves with unsolvable theoretical questions because there’s so many theories about design and as a designer you should recognize what kind of designer you are. Whether you are a rational, self expressive, prosumer, universal, or anonymous designer. Theories can play a huge role on how you want to communicate design. The role that technology plays in shaping design is that it makes it easier for designers to create more “form and content”. It brings a more collective authorship, in which makes designers more universal.

The most urgent problems facing designers today is that there are constant changes happening. Keeping up to date can be difficult and the process of  “form to be functional” constantly needs to be enhanced. However, having a method when designing  can make the process easier. For instance, a graphic designer can design a poster to inform and communicate with the public using techniques and methods they know in order to do so. The designer is responsible for solving these problems because they are the ones that connect art and the public, in order to respond to the needs that are being demanded.

Jasmine – Assignment 1b

Technology has greatly shaped and molded design into something different. It changed the role of designers for they are now “prosumers.” A prosumer is a term Dmitri Siegel uses in his blog entry on Design Observer. What he does with this term is merge the word producer and consumer. This term is used to describe designers now because now designers are now in charge of design, manufacture, and development.

Designers use to just design the product and the next step goes on to someone else but now with technology this middle man has been cut out of the equation. It relates to the ideology of why have someone else do it for you when you can easily do it yourself, with new technology basically being the definition of convenience.Technology is basically everywhere now and there’s an app or program for just about anything. All of these different softwares put new tools into the hands of designers.

Technology is also pushing designers to produce work that contains more different content. Before work would most create work for successful businesses and aesthetic practices. However now it is becoming common to also see the created works that contain contents relating to social justice. Content is slowly evolving to relate to designers’ new audiences. The digital world and its culture causes designers to rethink and adapt their designs so their message can come across to the new audience. This means that designers learn new techniques and gain new tools to create new different forms of work to adapt to this change in culture and society.

Or Szyflingier – Assignment 1b

Design plays a crucial role as a mediator between functionality, aesthetics, and society that creates balance all around us. Modern artists are called designers, who share a purpose of establishing a connection between art and the public, while being aware of feelings, and needs, they also carry the responsibilities to respond to demand, and solve problems to better life.

Designers are trained to be open minded and thrive on creativity. It allows them to envision products, and scenarios which makes them capable of understanding society’s needs, and solve issues by using different methods and technology. One of the tools that designers use is visual language, which consists of signs, colors, and symbols. They help convey messages in the most sufficient and efficient way, and change based on daily needs. Meaning, back in the 1900’s we didn’t have cars or highways, so the need to use symbols along the road didn’t exist, where now signs are used to direct or even alert drives before they get into a construction zone, or a steep road.

Along with visual language, technology is another tool that helps empower designers who actually carry the responsibility to engage more culturally, politically, and create thought provoking conversations in manners that are at the forefront such as sustainability and social justice. Designers can advocate, promote, share and even reach out to people from different cultures, and countries.

And although technology is helpful and plays a crucial role in design, it is also design that plays a great role in technology. Similar to what came first, ‘the chicken or the egg’, we have machines such as X-ray that allow us to see beyond our physical capabilities, and yet a designer had to think, plan, test and build such a machine to answer the demands of people who’re having internal pain.

Designers carry one main responsibility and it is to keep the world moving. They are always up to date with technology, social issues, and different trends. They help raise awareness, highlight issues, solve problems and engage with society by using a visual language to convey/ deliver a message. Designers think, observe, search, plan, and strategize, so our beliefs, and dreams would turn into reality, so we don’t compromise but advance and learn.

Assignment 1B

In these two readings, the authors think that the role of design play in society is to draw people’s attention to new information and development that is currently happening. Over the years new cultures arise and change the view on things. It is shown when designers create designs during that time or era. In order to distinguish the fields of design from other creative occupations is that in the design field there are branches such as environmental design, communication design, and industrial design.

Designers concern themselves with an unsolvable theoretical question is because the design has multiple possibilities one person alone can’t discover it on their own every person is different and thinks differently which means they learn something that you didn’t or acquire unique techniques and ideas that can help further develop your design. This can help create potential solutions that can solve social problems that communicate well. As technology evolves over time designers notice it has made it easier to create or develop their design easier as well as efficient. The urgent problems facing designers today is creating content that speak to the target audience and develop a personal brand of design. In a career in design, there has been a case where the designer would design something and not receive credit for or design something for one client and some other company person would copy it or use it for their solution. Over time designers found waves to prove ownership or proof of creating the design.

As designer why are we responsible for solving problems that need attention because we want to help communicate with the community to deliver the message that people can understand and easier to see on common day objects from magazines to posters to billboards. As a designer, it has become our prime goal to design a solution that would affect or change the community that can be can display beautify over any object that can grab the audience’s attention.
