I learned many things useful things in this class, from advertising to presentations and many other things. Making presentations on the different graphic design movements helped me review what I learned in my history of graphic design class and also to represent it through the design of the slides. The presentations helped my presentation skills and communicating ideas. I researched how these design styles constantly are used by designers and for companies nowadays and sometimes it looks amazing.

Two things I didn’t expect to learn in this class were symbols and the 7 depth of meaning. Learning about symbols and indexes was really helpful. I already knew about icons but I didn’t know how reliant graphic design is on indexes and symbols, especially since they help communicate ideas simply and quickly by having a meaning attached to it. I remember learning about the usage of icons and symbols throughout the Olympics. It amazed me how the events were organized for the Olympics of Mexico in 1968. It was so clear and amazingly designed and looked beautiful. Learning about the 7 depths of meaning was huge for me. I didn’t think that those techniques were being used throughout advertisements and learning about them made think that some ads are really smart. In addition, watching the TED talks helped me get inspired and learn on things I never thought about. I never thought about how design causes happiness, where inspiration comes from or how design can inspire others.

The trips we went on during the class were something I really enjoyed. It was really cool to go to Dropbox and also Anomaly. Students rarely get to go to big agencies or companies so having the chance to go and interact with the people that work there is awesome. It was helpful to hear what these two places want to see in applicant’s applications and their work. I really enjoyed hearing from the recruiters and the creative teams how they work and how someone’s skills need to add to the team. I wasn’t sure if I would work or if my dream would be to work at these place, but I guess I still haven’t figured out what kind of workplace I’d like to end up at because I wanna try everything. I’d consider applying for internships at either Anomaly or Dropbox. Nonetheless, I really appreciate going on trips to these companies and firms and I found them really helpful.

I’m not sure what to say about what I had wished I had learned in this class because it was a mix of everything and I never came into this class with an idea of what I’d like to learn. I felt this class covered a lot of different topics within graphic design. I learned a lot of helpful things in this class. Many of the things I learned this class will continue with me even when I move to other classes. All in all, I found this class helpful and important.
