How do traditional gender roles that are depicted on television shows affect the way society views the position of women?
I got interested in this research question because as someone who watches a lot of tv and enjoy binge-watching new tv shows I’ve realized that many of the women I see in these shows they are doing the stereotypical tasks that society deem as the “norm”. This really became something I was interested in just a few weeks ago in my sociology class as we were learning about how television can affect the way we function or portray society. As I continued to think about this it dawned on me that women in tv shows are characterized as conventional. Women in tv shows are seen at home, cooking, taking care of the kids while the man/husband is out working being the “breadwinner”. Even when the women have a job in these shows often times they are doing jobs that doesn’t go outside of their typical “assigned roles”. The answers and information I expect to find in response to my research question is the influence that television have on the way women are viewed.
