Mary Wollstonecraft is writing this letter because she wants to emphasize how unfair women are treated in France. She argues that women have limited rights and have to follow a certain role given by men. In the letter, she mentions “If the pure flame of patriotism has reached their hearts, they should work to improve the morals of their fellow-citizens by teaching men not only •to respect modesty in women but •to become modest themselves, as the only way to deserve women’s respect.” What she means is that for women to be respected, men should not assume or degrade the value of a woman and on the contrary, they should educate their citizens to embrace women. She wants men to respect them not by the stereotypes but because they are also as strong as them. The reason why Mary sees this as an issue is that she understands that women are more valuable than what society makes them and the only way for her to make a change is to write down her opinions and make her voice be heard. I would identify the Wollstonecraft discourse community as a one-sided community controlled by men. Her goal is to fight for all the women in this community and demand justice against the government.
