Quote 1: “These DCs have acquired many abbreviations and acronyms as well as some special words and phrases that are needed in order to get their jobs done more quickly and more efficiently—terminologies that are not used, nor even often understood, by the general public.”

Explanation: I found the quote compelling because I feel I can relate to it, because my major is Mechanical Engineering and I get taught many terms and definitions related to the field. I learn different acronyms and abbreviations known in engineering companies. I learn different skills to help solve problems. However, when I talk with one of my family members who is a nurse. She often talks about her job and uses different terms and acronyms I never heard of, leaving me lost and confused.

Quote 2: “I know when the building is unlocked and how to gain access when it is locked, where the toilets are, and who to ask for technical help. I know which codes to use for the photocopier, and where to find certain office supplies, and so on. However, when I travel to another university for a conference, I do not know any of these things and, unless the signage is excellent, I will probably soon get lost.”

I found this quote compelling and relatable to me because during my time in High school I developed certain habits, and understood where things are, and how to do things a certain way. I knew where the classrooms were, the teachers names, bathrooms and more. Then when I transitioned to college I had to adjust. I got lost, didn’t know how the classrooms where ordered, and couldn’t figure out how to sign up for my classes.
