Podcast

After about a month of being at my company I was also teamed up with the Operations manager of our Social Media as well as the host of my company’s podcast Justin Michuad. Meg, my senior designer, decided that we would work best together at keeping the social media platforms up to date with what the company was doing as well as testimonials from people Justin has interviewed on his podcast. Above and below are two examples of Instagram posts i have created using direct quotes from users of our app. Corey Batchelor (above) was able to get a picture to us. Initially my design included a larger picture of Corey with text laid over it however Meg pointed out that with a quote we want to make the words the most important element in the post not necessarily what the person looks like.

In my second post I was forced to use a different approach for George Pappa’s quote (above) because I was not able to acquire a picture of him. After going through the library I created when I began my internship I stumbled across this picture of a forest from above. Due to the overwhelming amount of elements in some of the other nature photos I have, this was the easiest to read text on top of. I learned that although there is a branding guideline for a company, each post or advertisement needs to be tweaked slightly due to the resources I have available to me.

Social Media

After completing the infographic and attending the expo with my boss I returned back to work and began to design social media content for all platforms including twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. One of the first posts I created for Medicate Me (above) took many revisions to get the initial template that we all agreed would work the best on Instagram. We decided that very little copy and a kind of softer image would work best on Instagram due to the fact that many people tend to flick very fast while using that app. After deciding on a look and feel of our posts I began to make a library of images taken from free sites like Unsplash in order to make our imagery cohesive.

Now that I had created a library of images and established a feel to the brand I began to work on other social media platforms like Facebook (above). Because of the different sizing of a Facebook banner I felt as if the design wasn’t as impactful in this format. After realizing this I contacted my senior designer and we went through a few different reformats of the design until we both decided that a full format picture would work best.I also needed the show that this app was diverse and easy for people of all ages to use so I was able to come up with this banner (below).

Networking

On September 27th I attended the New Jersey CannaBusiness Expo in Kenilsworth, NJ. This was the first networking event I have attended not as a student but as part of a company. At first I was a little intimated because it was on me to document this event as well as make sure I kept track of all the potential investors that we met. Throughout the event my boss Josh and I were able to interview many people including former DEA agents and retired NHL and NFL players. Not only did I learn about PR during this expo but I also learned a lot about the current state and future of cannabis as a business. After interviewing players like Eugene Monroe and Riley Cote we were able to that information and quotes and apply them to our companies testimonies and ads.

While at the event I was able to do some networking of my own as well. A few times throughout the day Josh and i separated because he wanted me to go and interact and connect with other potential clients. I thought this was a great opportunity to get rid of the crutch of my boss to lean on and go out on my own. I was able to make connections with a magazine company called Sensi magazine and hope to send them some of my work soon.

Experience

My first project on the job was to create an infographic for a presentation to the players association of the NFL. At first I was definitely intimated by this project due to the fact that it was my first time working for a real company. Also, initially, I was presented a very small amount of information which ,after many revisions, became what you see above.  Upon approaching this project I first needed to come up with a grid as well as decide what copy I would need to properly inform the client as to what our app is doing. The big problem that I needed to overcome was that my company is still in its beta phase. This being said I needed to find a way to present statistical data that wasn’t necessarily there. After deciding how I was going to go about solving this problem I began to dive in and slowly tweak my designs with my senior designer over the course of about two weeks.

Above is my first design which we ultimately decided was too much green and needed variability in color. After designing a few versions of this infographic i was able to dial in on the look and feel of the company that my senior designer ultimately wanted. This was a big learning experience for me because it taught me how many little tweaks really go in to making something on brand and readable. It also taught me how to work directly with a senior designer for the first time.

My workplace

Because Medicate Me is based in Surfside Beach, SC I am currently working remotely from my house for my company. Every Friday I update my company with my work schedule for the following week to make sure that I am keeping up and clocking all of my hours. Normally I work for my internship about 12-15 hours a week depending on my work schedule for my job. Typically I have meetings once a week for an hour over google hangouts with my senior designer as well as our app designer to discuss the status of the company, upcoming projects, and any other information that we need to have an extensive conversation about. Throughout the week I stay in touch with Meg ,my senior designer, via our Medicate Me Slack channel. This app allows our entire company to chat via instant messaging privately as well as in a group. This app also allows us to send any needed files and links that are viable in creating a look and feel for our brand.

My interview

Around mid August I attended HempFest in Philadelphia, PA. Upon arriving at the concert i noticed a bunch of booths set up geared towards the legalization of cannabis and cannabis products. Upon walking around the sea of booths one in particular stood out to me because it was the only app company there. Naturally I approached with great curiosity and after only about 20 minutes of talking to them i inquired if they had any internships open. This sparked a conversation that would ultimately lead me to sending my portfolio into Meg Bair my senior designer. Within a few days I was asked to have a interview over google hangout with her and her husband Josh. They were very interested in what unique qualities I was bringing to their company and after explaining to them that i share the same passions towards the movement I was hired the next day.

Upon starting work for Medicate Me was put in charge of all social media design within my company. Due to myself being the youngest person working for Medicate Me I think it was a no brainer to put me in charge on online advertising.

Internship Blog

Medicate Me is a new mobile app, tracks medication intake and correlates it with symptom changes, providing you with data that makes it possible to track the effectiveness of a treatment plan. When treating medical cannabis patients, tracking the effectiveness of their treatment plan can be arduous.  Data related to the effectiveness of individual strains or treatments is not always available, creating additional challenges.Using the Medicate Me app, patients record each time they use a medication and then rate their symptoms on a 1-10 scale at regular intervals. The data provides you, their physician, with valuable information to determine if the patients’ treatment plan needs to be amended.

Currently my company is still in its startup phase but is a private company as of right now. Medicate Me is currently working on getting investors as well as finding doctors and dispensaries to link their information to our app. Since the start of my internship I have been working on material to promote the app as well as handouts for users as well as infographics and social media design.
