Experience

My first project on the job was to create an infographic for a presentation to the players association of the NFL. At first I was definitely intimated by this project due to the fact that it was my first time working for a real company. Also, initially, I was presented a very small amount of information which ,after many revisions, became what you see above.  Upon approaching this project I first needed to come up with a grid as well as decide what copy I would need to properly inform the client as to what our app is doing. The big problem that I needed to overcome was that my company is still in its beta phase. This being said I needed to find a way to present statistical data that wasn’t necessarily there. After deciding how I was going to go about solving this problem I began to dive in and slowly tweak my designs with my senior designer over the course of about two weeks.

Above is my first design which we ultimately decided was too much green and needed variability in color. After designing a few versions of this infographic i was able to dial in on the look and feel of the company that my senior designer ultimately wanted. This was a big learning experience for me because it taught me how many little tweaks really go in to making something on brand and readable. It also taught me how to work directly with a senior designer for the first time.

My workplace

Because Medicate Me is based in Surfside Beach, SC I am currently working remotely from my house for my company. Every Friday I update my company with my work schedule for the following week to make sure that I am keeping up and clocking all of my hours. Normally I work for my internship about 12-15 hours a week depending on my work schedule for my job. Typically I have meetings once a week for an hour over google hangouts with my senior designer as well as our app designer to discuss the status of the company, upcoming projects, and any other information that we need to have an extensive conversation about. Throughout the week I stay in touch with Meg ,my senior designer, via our Medicate Me Slack channel. This app allows our entire company to chat via instant messaging privately as well as in a group. This app also allows us to send any needed files and links that are viable in creating a look and feel for our brand.

My interview

Around mid August I attended HempFest in Philadelphia, PA. Upon arriving at the concert i noticed a bunch of booths set up geared towards the legalization of cannabis and cannabis products. Upon walking around the sea of booths one in particular stood out to me because it was the only app company there. Naturally I approached with great curiosity and after only about 20 minutes of talking to them i inquired if they had any internships open. This sparked a conversation that would ultimately lead me to sending my portfolio into Meg Bair my senior designer. Within a few days I was asked to have a interview over google hangout with her and her husband Josh. They were very interested in what unique qualities I was bringing to their company and after explaining to them that i share the same passions towards the movement I was hired the next day.

Upon starting work for Medicate Me was put in charge of all social media design within my company. Due to myself being the youngest person working for Medicate Me I think it was a no brainer to put me in charge on online advertising.

Internship Blog

Medicate Me is a new mobile app, tracks medication intake and correlates it with symptom changes, providing you with data that makes it possible to track the effectiveness of a treatment plan. When treating medical cannabis patients, tracking the effectiveness of their treatment plan can be arduous.  Data related to the effectiveness of individual strains or treatments is not always available, creating additional challenges.Using the Medicate Me app, patients record each time they use a medication and then rate their symptoms on a 1-10 scale at regular intervals. The data provides you, their physician, with valuable information to determine if the patients’ treatment plan needs to be amended.

Currently my company is still in its startup phase but is a private company as of right now. Medicate Me is currently working on getting investors as well as finding doctors and dispensaries to link their information to our app. Since the start of my internship I have been working on material to promote the app as well as handouts for users as well as infographics and social media design.
