    You need to soften the light. The light used in food photography is always very soft.

    First diffuse the main light. Put tracing paper over it. Make a diffuser and hold it in front of the light. the farther it is from the light, the more it will diffuse the light.

    Next, you need to reflect light into the shadows to lighten them. Use a white surfae, just out of the frame to do this.
