Hi, I’m Patrick. My career goal is to become a costume designer for film & tv. Two of my favorite photo and video artists are Nick Knight and Steve McQueen.
I hope this class will help you. We aren’t specifically going to do anything with fashion photography but hopefully the focus on composition and light will be of use. Nick Knight stands out because of how starkly he lights the model.
12 years a slave was one of the greatest movies I have ever seen. But that was the power of the story not so much the visuals. Though this makes the point that having something to say is more important than anything else.
Hi everyone, my name is Rany Selem. I am a senior and I major in COMD. I plan to be a game designer in the future but right now I am focused on marketing and photography would help me with that.I am from Egypt so I can speak Arabic and English. I hope to improve my photography skills in this class.
I hope this class will help you create images for your marketing campaigns.
I’m attending City Tech for a degree in Communication Design with a focus on Advertising. I have a newfound interest in aerial photography, landscape photography, and cinematography. I took intro to photography last semester and have taken a deeper interest in taking photos now since understanding the fundamentals better. Something else about myself, I have a small animal skull collection.
extended…
When I first attended City Tech I was studying for a degree in Electrical Mechanical Engineering. After two years of agonizing over failing Calculus multiple times, I decided to change my major to Communication Design to try and explore a more “right-brained”career path that still adheres to my interests. I enjoy illustrating a little bit, my drawings are mostly microliner monochrome stipple-shaded still-life pieces.
Recently, I purchased a dji Mavic Mini drone which is a radio-controlled quad-copter with a 12 megapixel camera and it opened my eyes to a side of photography and cinematography I loved immediately. Being able to see your world from hundreds of feet above is so interesting to me. I hope to be more experienced in editing and production because I may want to shoot aerial photos and videos professionally when I graduate. Photography is a huge portion of any work in the Design field. Photography skills are vital in the world of advertising and design. Being able to not only manipulate and use images and photographs in a professional setting but also provide those images yourself seems beneficial to me.
If you don’t know the work of George Steinmetz, look it up. He is not a drone photographer per se. In fact, he started doing aerial photography from a motorized paraglider. The images are amazing.
I’m Delbert, and this is my 5th year at city tech. I have a high interest in photography. In fact I happen to own a cannon camera, and I use it to do photo shoots and portraits. when I get out the City Tech, I would like to go for photography, but I also want to be a graphic designer, or an animator. I also have 2 different portfolios plus a couple of old sketch books. I want to be the best artist that I can possibly be.
I am a canon user too. Hopefully, you will learn something in this class that you can use when you do portraits or other types of shoots.
Hi, Im Jonathan Lopez a 31 yr old Puerto Rican man from Miami, FL living in Brooklyn now for 8 yrs. I am a freelance filmmaker and photographer with a focus on documentary work telling lesser-known stories in communities of color. I came back to school to finish my BFA with a concentration in Motion GFX and web design and I’m excited to be back in a learning environment.
I’m looking to keep building my design skillset and rounding out my expertise. I look forward to adding web design, branding, and graphic design to my services by the time I graduate from City Tech.
Great to have you in the class!
Hey everyone!
My name is Jonathan B. You can call me Jon. I’m in COMD with a focus on motion design. I’m also part of the Moving Pixels video club as a videographer.
I chose this major as I always had an interest with graphic design and I aspire to become a vfx/motion artist in the future.
When I graduate I’m hoping to land in a position where I can utilize motion, photography, and video without limitations. Photography helps me capture the world which then helps me replicate those ideas into digital projects (like 3d).
I’m on instagram by handle of soudeska_ .
I can’t wait to grow and learn more photography with everyone!
Hi Jonathan,
I enjoyed reading your post. I think motion design is very interesting, I thought about focusing my major on that as well but decided to go for marketing instead. I also like your response about photography helping capture the world. The role that photography play in today’s society is very powerful.
Thank you 🙂
Lovely to have you in one of my classes for a second semester!
My name is Amena, I am a Junior in the Communication Design department. I am focusing on Graphic Designing and Advertisement because I enjoy creating designs especially if it’s going to be shown on a product. Its satisfying to me when I see a design made by me being used. When I graduate I hope to work with clients and companies that I can design for including packages. I had Photography 1 class and I learned how to use a dslr camera but it is still a bit confusing for me. I speak English and Bangla and I can understand Hindi but its hard for me to speak it. I can also read Arabic.
I wish there was no such thing as Covid and that we would be working together in the studio this semester with dslrs. Hopefully, this class will help you get more out of your iPhone 11.
Hello everyone! My name is Jessenia Nayotl but you can call me Jess or Jessie. This is my 9th semester and joined this class because both interested and required( I might be wrong there) but I look forward on learning more about photography. I have been interested in photography and graphic design during my high school years and thanks to the experience I wanted to keep studying design. I enjoy drawing and coming up with ideas for future projects. I also speak spanish although I do have a hard time translating english to spanish haha. A small fact about me is that I used to play the clarinet (it’s on my future buy list).
Photography II is not required so I am glad to hear that you are also interested in the class!
Hello everyone, My name is Nicole Biggs my major is Communication Design ( graphic design). I chose this major because I knew I wanted a career in the Arts but didn’t know what field and Communication Design would give me the opportunity to learn a little of everything. When I graduate from City Tech I hope that I would both freelance and work for a corporation. Photography would enhance my work since I’ll be using my own images, I have takeb photography 1 last semester and hope to gain more knowledge this semester.
I hope this class will help you take the photographs for your other projects!
Hi! My name is Jessie and I’m majoring in Communication Design. I chose this major with little to no knowledge of graphic design but I always enjoy seeing the creations made with art and photography, so I thought, why not give it a try. When I graduate, I hope to be able to design and produce things like magazines, websites, or marketing materials like posters/flyers, and maybe even clothing designs. Photography may play a role in that because I might need to eventually photograph products or even use and interpret photos into illustrations.
I always enjoy taking photos of sights that capture my eyes, like landscapes or architecture. A lot of times, if I see the sky full of pretty clouds, pretty colors, or anything out of the ordinary, I try not to let down a chance of capturing what I see. The same goes with buildings or interesting architectures, whether they would be old-fashioned or modern.
I speak English and Cantonese. I usually only speak Cantonese when I’m with family. I’ve taken other language courses like Spanish and French but I’m nowhere near fluent in either. I also understand some Mandarin.
An instrument I used to play a lot was piano but that was awhile ago when I used to practice for exams. After finishing the levels, I stopped playing for years. However, sometimes when I find a song that I want to practice and hear on the piano, I would try to learn it myself but I haven’t really gotten to enjoying it as much as I wish I did.
I am planning that the class will do a session on product photography though I may change this. It generally requires minimal photographic skill and a lot of skill with Photoshop.
My name is Oneil Anderson and I’m a Media Design student. I find the major to be fairly interesting and chose it because i consume massive amounts of media and felt that it was time to put out and actually see if i could create my own. I joined this photography class because I needed an elective of sorts but I wanted something that offered another skill set. My current skill set leans towards typography, concepting, and illustrations. I would love to actually be involved in advertisement one day and photography is still used heavily in it as well. One can capture quite a bit in a photograph than no amount of illustration skills can replicate. I’ve taken one photography one back in my freshman year but that was at a completely different school. I also read quite a bit(books, comics, manga, etc.), listen to music(Multitudes of genres just to hear different musical sounds), play games(PS4, PC,etc. even a board game or 2) and watch films(I enjoy most genres ranging from scifi, fantasy, historical, comedy, etc.) . I’ve noticed that when someone consumes a lot of media you tend to pick up on quite a few things such as the directors intent in his or her film or a musicians feelings based on the tone or instruments used in the song. Picking up on all of these is what i really enjoy about media and is primarily why I want to be involved an advertisement.
Hopefully, this class will add to your skill set. I think it is really important not so much to consume media but to feed yourself with rich and meaningful imagery if you are an artist or designer..
Hey, my name is Omar Richards,I am currently a junior majoring in Communication Design. I chose this major because I’ve always had an interest within design. when I graduate I hope to continue to learn and advance as a creative. photography play a role in that because, its always interested me and its something I could see myself doing it in the future. i wouldn’t personally say I had that long of a relationship with photograghy.
Photography is a terrific compliment to design skills. And my assumptions for the students taking this class is that they have only had one previous semester.
Hello, my name is Jamir Campbell. I am a graphic designer; I chose my major because it allows me to be myself and allows me to be creative. As this year goes on, I hope to become better at a lot of things, such as using different lighting sources and my composition. I would not say I have a specific style when it comes to photography. I tend to take pictures of anything I find to be interesting. Most of my pictures are of landscape photos and Still life photos. What I hope to do when I graduate is something involving advertising or Film, I see myself doing leaning towards these types of careers. I also like Photography because, Photography lets you express yourself your opinions and beliefs. You do this by choosing what you photograph, and how you represent it. This aspect of your photography is ever changing as you change. You get a sense of what a photographer is like as a person by looking at their body of work. I think everyone should get into photography. You do not have to do it professional it could just be a hobby I find photography to be very relaxing and a huge stress reliever. With a photo you can capture a moment and have it forever. I think that is a luxury a lot of people take for granted. I do not know where I want to go with photography, but I have fun doing it.
Photography is a great way to express your beliefs. One of the most important choices you make is what to photograph.
One thing though, photography as a hobby can be a stress reliever but if you are doing it as a job and you miss a shot, its pretty stressful! 🙂
Hello, my name is Andrew Chen, and this is my 3rd semester in Communication Design at City Tech. As a Communication design major, I am focusing on advertising. With this degree, I want to be able to advertise products but more on the visual engineering. Us human have incredible ideas, imaginations and the ability to think outside of the box. Computers, cameras are amazing with getting task done and accurately. When combining two elements, results can be magical that people would never believe the image created was real to begin with.
I really enjoy the idea of creating digital work that gives a meaningful message. It is also fun to come up with ideas to reach out to the target audience. On my free time, I practice food photography. My Instagram is mainly sushi experience, but I am transitioning to local restaurants to help small businesses. From my experience, I always felt that I have great ideas and structure on how I want this project done, but my execution is below average. Sometimes I feel that my work is out of style or too boring and I want to make it more alive. I need to practice more with editing, using Adobe. Hopefully I can master it by the end of this semester.
Great to have you in the class again this semester. My focus tends to be on capture and not editing but you are always welcome to edit any of your assignments.
I am a junior at City tech, enrolled in The Communication Design program with a focus in Advertising. I chose this major because I always had an interested in advertisement. I am always impress by what good advertisement can do for a business. I am not sure what I’m going to do after I graduate. Covid-19 has change a lot of my plans. Moreover, I think that in today’s society we all have some experience with photography. I personally enjoy taking photos of my love ones and food! I want to learn from this class to take better photos, definitely want to learn about camera usage and lighting. Furthermore, I am fluent in Spanish, I was born and raised in The Dominican Republic. One more thing I would like to share is that I picked up painting during quarantine and I can’t stop! Really enjoying painting these days.
Thank you for reading 🙂
I agree that everyone today has some experience with photography.
There is a lot to be learned from painting that you can use in photography.
Hey Gloria, I didn’t know you were Dominican. I’m Dominican too. We were together in Photography I Spring 2020 right? If we were let me know so we can share our contacts.
Hello all,
My name is Isadora Martinez, I’m a Communication Design major. I’m passionate about web design but love all aspects of branding and media marketing. I’m planning on having a Digital Agency someday and offering all marketing services including Photography. So I hope this class helps me deepen my knowledge on photography. I’ve done a couple of photography courses quite a while ago so I don’t remember them that much. My strongest experience is Photography I. I speak two languages Spanish and English as a native speaker. I love soccer and sports in general. I go by she/her.
