Bio

My name is Daniel King and I’m currently studying Communication Design at City Tech with an interest in pursuing a career in Company Identity/Branding/Logo Design/Advertising. When I first came to City Tech I was originally studying Electrical Mechanical Engineering. After two years I realized I wasn’t meant to go down that professional path and I started chasing a goal that felt more creatively rewarding. I’ve always had a knack for design and art and a keen eye for realizing intricacies in the way brands and companies make themselves appear and appeal to their target demographic. Music album covers and tattoo design are a couple types of art media that I also have a particular fondness for.

I’m currently about three years into my bachelors degree in Communication Design. I like the pace of the work because completing small projects and watching my ideas evolve and grow better over time feels very rewarding. Design is a multi-headed beast where you need to be open to challenges and learning new things like using creative software or accepting that not all your first ideas are golden. I like being challenged and learning something in the process and then succeeding in completing tasks.

I’m currently employed at a privately owned Club/Event space as a bartender. Being a bartender has taught me how to be fast, efficient, and take pride in what I create. As for my personal life, I currently live with my fiancee and my cats. I grew up in Brooklyn and enjoy playing video games and shuffleboard competitively, cooking and eating good food, and traveling.

COMD 1100

This basic design and color theory course explores graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. This is a course in visual literacy and the design process: How we see, how we analyze the effects of our vision, and how we craft a design that will have energy and content. All projects will include thumbnail sketches, discussion and research. A weekly scrapbook will be kept. Media used are paint, paper, ink, pencil, ruler, knife, glue, and digital software for expressing graphic ideas. Numerous critiques will take place throughout the course and students’ active engagement in group discussion will play a vital role in establishing an atmosphere of collaboration and shared learning.
