WEEK 9 Class Info
- Date: 3/22/24: WEEK 9 is VISUAL METAPHORS + COLOR THEORY and how it connects the worlds of Editorial and Commercial Illustration . Last Call for Inked Midterms.
DUE WEEK 9/This Week
- Source & Supply THREE (3) News Stories that inspire you personally or professionally. Seek out articles that include text that helps build visuals, look for metaphors, comparisons, analogies and components within the text that inspire visual interpretations of the article and its primary take-away. Just like Step 1 in Ideating that we know from Weeks 1-6, reading the article and doing research is part of the process before leaping into sketches or visuals. Often times there is a phrase, quote or sentence that will inspire you, or cracks the code for you to use something within the text or that you can imagine ideas that would compliment the authors intent for the article. • Leave a comment on ‘Week 8 in Review!’ with a 1-sentence summary (expand upon the purpose/primary point/essential contents of the article being conveyed to you/the reader) and the link to the article. No Paywalls.

Objectives
- Week 9 uses EVERYTHING we’ve learned so far and shows how Editorial Illustration overlaps with Commercial Illustration via Advertising. This class explores roles in advertising, functions of an agency, and how your own creative goals can find a source of income within. If there is no ethical consumption under capitalism—what part do you play, personally and professionally? How does color theory influence all aspects of print and how can use of the color wheel further advance your skills as an Illustrator. How will yur ability to create compelling, clever and engaging visual metaphors set you apart from other Illustrators?
Activities
Discussion

- Drawing the News: Review Stories
- Lecture: Newsprint and Advertising needing each other, creating an expansive field for Illustrators. Going beyond Editorial Illustration and using the same techniques with visual metaphors, we explore the purpose of Commercial Art and it’s role in the world and consumerism. Using Iconic branding and imagery, we delve into color theory and how Illustrators use color schemes to their advantage to push concepts and establish their own style.
