Objectives

  • Closing this out with a review of previous classes, exercises, take-aways and key lessons before launching into your final files preparation. The class has come a long way and it’s important to realize the steps and the improvements and the ongoing commitment to the practice. You know what questions to ask, how to prepare for the assignment, deliver the assignment in stages (sketch > advanced sketch to refine composition and final placement/design choices), and what inking and pencil techniques to achieve value, contrast, depth and lighting to add more detail into your work… to express to others more of what you have in mind.

Activities

  • From expressions and emotions last week and the 1/2 and 1/3 face builds we did in-class w13, we dive a little deeper into the “general” constructs of the face and explore the anchor points of many of these expressions. We will use a print out that provides a grid/breakdown of the face and by following the tutorial we will build some face, one in an attempt to be “general,” and the other to be more loose and explorative.

Fairytale Folktale or Fable Reboot — Overall Description:

In this multilayered project you will reinterpret a classic folk tale, fairy tale, or established story found in pop culture or media through your own creative lens. (Inquire if this project can be adapted to support other work, projects, or your own story)

For example, Note how different artists over time have reinterpreted the story of Alice in Wonderland, by Louis Carrol. But the point of this project isn’t to mirror the original tale but drawn with your own aesthetic — it’s to take the NARRATIVE and BIG IDEA of the classic tale and put that NARRATIVE/BIG IDEA into a different setting / environment / timeline / wardrobe / planet / etc so that its new way to tell a classic tale that is your own.

For instance, Alice in Wonderland could be set in space or in modern times like Real Housewives. The character of Alice could be re-interpreted as a male, the modern woman, an animal, or a character with a different approach to the story than Alice’s traditional, compliant stroll through the story. Or, the Mad Hatter is a business man trying to buy a young entrepreneurial Alice’s business (bakery? product? real estate?) on behalf of a crooked company that’s run by the Queen. Or, told in modern times and the Rabbit she chases is “Alicia’s” Personal Assistant unaware that she is following a schedule set by a villain in hopes to destroy her! All the components of the original “Alice in Wonderland” tale but re-imagined into something new, something that is ultimately yours.

  • Part 1 Requirement 1: CONCEPT: Settle on a concept for your reinterpretation. The story should still be easily recognizable.
  • Part 1 Requirement 2: RESEARCH: Create a Pintrest Board, online moodboard, or collect images to collage for this project.
  • Part 1 Requirement 3: STORY PROPOSAL: Write a brief ~3 paragraph summary of your proposed project to post to the open lab/share with class. INCLUDE: • What is the original story? Link to story • Explanation of the changes you are making for your interpretation • Summary of your story. • Description of the characters and setting • Demographic for this proposed project

5/17 • W15 FINAL PRESENTATION: Everyone will present their project. Presentations should last no longer than 10minutes. Everything required for the presentation is every stage you’ve gone through to complete the project. MATERIALS FOR THE FINALS ARE DUE AT THE START OF CLASS. NO FINALS WILL BE ACCEPTED DURING/AFTER CLASS (UNLESS PERMISSION IS GIVEN).

No jokes. No exceptions. Plan accordingly.
