Lecture
Type on the third dimension. Type on a box: samples of type on a cube–experimental and practical applications.
Specifically: Typography on boxes (packaging) or in the three dimensions (signage)
Technical
- Redraw the template using illustration software on a layer, complete with crop marks for future cutting.
Preparation
- Photograph a three-dimensional object that carries only a typographic image, nothing else (no photos, graphics or other visual elements).
- Find or download template of a cube to fit an 8.5 x 11” format. Print three copies. Bring tracing paper and pencils, knife, blades and cutting board to the sessions.

Homework
- Continue to refine the design on the cube, taking care of the edges and wrap around.
Session 2
- Cut out the cubes, fold and assemble, holding it together with tape.
- Critique by the end of the class. Each student makes an online presentation of their cube(s).
