Lecture

Lecture: Developing meaning to the image; conveying thoughts and emotions through images. Examples of small images and their impact on actions and ideas. Pictographic systems in world cultures.

Adrinka Symbols: A system of pictograms used throughout Africa in graphic and textile uses.
Symbols used by the Incas in Peru. Fabrics, graphic communications, architecture and geoglyphs.

Specifically: Critique of six images each of color icons; three are chosen to create a developed suite. Final refinement with regard to image reduction.

Technical

  • Processing of icon images for screen and print. Assembly of reduced images in digital and analog formats; screen and paper printing explained. Resolution, template use.

Preparation 

  • Finish the three icons and put in the template; have digital and print-ready renditions of the three final icons.

Session 1

  • Critique to the final images.

Session 1 Homework

  • Send the print-ready images to print.

Session 2

  • The Hand-lettering project is explained.

Session 2 Homework

  • Print the nine pages of fonts given, come to class ready with tracing paper, markers, pencil and ruler.
