Marshall McLuhan was born in 1911 and passed away in 1980. He didn’t get to experience the web that exists today. However, he has still been a huge influence on it.

In The Medium is the Massage McLuhan says, “Societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by the content of the communication”. “The medium is the message” is a communication theory that the medium plays a crucial role and is possibly more valuable than the message itself. A certain message can be displayed across different mediums and each delivers a whole different experience and feeling. The medium of a message largely influences its place in society. For example, events today can claim they will “change the world” but 100 years ago without the tool of the internet, reaching the rest of the world was impossible.

Artists and designers today are able to create tools, experiences, services, and communities because of the internet. The Internet has a more powerful reach than any other medium in history. However, that doesn’t mean designers shouldn’t implement aesthetics. Designers should always consider how a design decision shapes the message. Colors, shapes, and other elements also play a role in the way the message is received.

“The medium is the message”

Understanding the message is based on the Medium, Designers have created art involving at least one of the three texts, image, and layout. If not they might have used all three. It’s very important when it comes to design to incorporate these elements, it influences the public’s perspective and The most important thing is the meaning behind the design. After adding certain elements “It became a graphic expression and an approbation of their feelings and thoughts” according to Fiore. But what about media and medium, does it influence the message? As technology has evolved the variety of platforms on which one can now publish has an impact on the design itself.

When we see McLuhan talk about “the medium is the message” we get a sense of how important the form of the medium is when communicating a message. the medium is the message because it is the way we choose to communicate a message and this plays a big role because we can alternate the meaning of the message by simply using different fonts or instead of a letter we can send a video. this alternates the way we perceive the message. As designers, we need to try to put out the best medium possible so the viewers don’t have a hard time trying to understand the message you are trying to communicate.

Technology has allowed for many new mediums to be produced to communicate messages. sometimes it might even be worrisome because there is so an extent to which we can produce a medium that it can be possible to manipulate this and even use it as a political or propaganda weapon. This new type of design needs to be carefully crafted before is put out into the world.

Designers have the power and the technology to choose to create different mediums to communicate and change the world, but it is only in their hands if they choose how they would use it and if this would be a good or bad thing for society. we as designers play one of the most important roles in shaping our society because we have the knowledge and the power to create to such an extent and be able to gain from it in any way. such power combined with the new technology can sometimes be threatening and this is why we must try to always choose the right way to communicate a message so we don’t alter or cause any change or destruction in our society.

I think the main idea behind “the medium is the message” is that the medium through which they carry the content plays a pivotal role in the way we perceived it. We use this with words today, in the way we get our information compared to how we got it in the past. Having an understanding is a way for people to create, interact and come up with new ideas. Artists and designers can do their best to provide their communities with joy, interaction, and empowerment through creativity, but must also be thoughtful of the political, economic, and social systems. Artists and designers must be creative in finding alternative forms of medium to get ideas and message across different platforms. Since every message is important, the content of which it carried the medium is important for the message to reach its audience. In the McLuhan, “The medium is the message” “because it is the medium that shapes and controls the scale and form of human connection and action.” As designers, we have a clear understanding and duty to provide our viewers with content that will bring awareness to what’s going on in the community and the world that we live. By using the different media outlet, we are using the medium as a substance through which any material can travel. Thus, we can get our message across the medium.

In today’s day and age, there are endless creations that are at the fingertips of humans. A single object such as a shovel has many tasks it can complete, such as shoveling snow, picking up garbage or sand. One can say the things the shovel (medium) can do would be the message. In the book ” Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man” Marshall McCluhan stresses the fact that the medium is the message. It is in what context the medium is used which determines the worth of it. In the reading, McCluhan claim, “Firearms are in themselves neither good nor bad; it is the way they are used that determines their value.” This is an example which puts into perspective what they are preaching. Firearms are not bad. It is the purpose that a person uses it, which dictates the side it falls into, whether it is positive or negative.

There is always going to be a good and bad purpose to any technological progressions humans develop. It is up to the individual to make that choice and face the outcome. Another claim the author made in the reading was “Many people would be disposed to say that it was not the machine, but what one did with the machine, that was its meaning or message.” The hazards technological progression might bring to an individual and society are endless because there is an abundance of things you can do. One may use technology to benefit themselves, which can hurt others as well.

Many fields can create new messages if they believe “medium is the message”, especially artists and designers, because they can find/make unique ways to use the medium to their advantage. The role they can play is up to them. It depends on the details such as the demographic and where they would place this to be acknowledged by the public. Designers can use their creative abilities to produce unique messages with mediums that are known and they’re able to have fun with it.

TITLE: Reading Response 8 – NV

The message: There is a person who tries to listen in some mysterious ways or perhaps listing the important message to hear the good news or the bad news, the font is a simple message with a mysterious typographical way.

And how: The typography is not an order to deliver the message but it’s quite messy in the move letters are close to each other’s combined as well as some high and low and it feels like unity standing together to face one another. Except, the important message has been delivered to civilization in a simple typeface as well .

You: This image is a simple design that may or may not lead to our lives. The image has different shapes of circles and two shades of color are black and white, which are negative and positive. The design is a simple circle as if shooting contest darts this idea is a different design that could lead to a different dimension. This design explains the different ways we can drive you crazy, whether we are hypnotized by the government, whether we are happy or sad. Living in the real world or perhaps living in different worlds drives you mentally insane.

Your work: This image shows the truth of a group of men showing their faces and noses feeling ready to go into action to survive among humans. This image shows the same pattern, the same face, and it feels like a government-controlled marching soldier preparing for war.
