Technology

Technology is the use of knowledge to invent new devices or tools. Technology originated from the Greek word tekhné (art, craft) and logia. This definition is toward children and this summary will contain multiple definitions and sentences for children to understand and have a better understanding.

Discussion of Definitions

To find these definitions I used google and that led me to multiple sites to help me further such kids Britannica, yourdictionary.com and learnersdictionary.com. I was excited to see different definitions tailored to all ages of children. Children understand meanings different so it is important to use the correct variation of a definition.

Definition #1 from YourDictionary.com/technology

Technology is the knowledge in solving problems or used to make tools. The advancement of technology has been tremendous, starting with the Stone Age with the creation of fire to the present with computers, smartphones and the Internet. This definition is useful for those who are learning about the idea of technology and an understanding of its advancement. I noticed that after the definition, the website included a little history of technology which I found very useful for an explanation for a child to understand what technology is and what it does.

Definition #2 by www.learnersdictionary.com

Technology is the use of science in a workplace where problems are solved or useful tools are made. Technology in hospitals is important and needed. We need thermometers to measure our temperature, scales to check our weight and stethoscopes to check our heartbeats and breathing to make sure we are healthy. These instruments are also called medical technology. This helps people break down how technology is used in different environments.

Definition #3 by www.kids.wordsmyth.net/

Technology is the strategy and the use of inventions in being able to solve problems in the areas it is needed. Technology has helped the world whether positively or negatively. Texting and driving has been a real big issue throughout the years harming a lot of people which can result in death. T.V commercials and posters were made to inform us that texting and driving is a dangerous thing to do. Technology went beyond that and created different phone applications to where messages and calls cannot be accessed while on the road.

500 Word Summary

SUBJECT: 500-word summary of “Bias in Technology”

ENG2575 500 Word Summary

Mone, G. (2017). Bias in Technology. Communications of the ACM, 60(1), 19-20

This article talks about the Technology field and their lack of women especially woman of color. Statistics show that industries have hired few African-American, Hispanics, and women compared to whites, Asian-Americans and men. According to a survey done in 2015 by the Computing Research Association, 4.6% of students who were awarded Bachelors in CS were African American and women represented 15.7%.

Diversity in a workplace is good for business because it shows social equality. Without diversity, things can become bias in productivity, for example, when photos of African Americans searched in google are tagged as “Gorillas” because of a mishap and when a soap dispenser did not register the hand of an African American. These things could had been prevented if there were more ideas that were diverse. Ideas from different genders and cultural backgrounds, products or services can be tailored to everybody and consumers would be pleased with the products they buy. With little to no progress in hiring women and those of color from previous years shows a pattern of a pipeline problem, meaning the lack of qualified women and people of color in a workplace and especially in the technology field. There are many qualified people fit for the job but are overlooked so many times.

Ann Quiroz Gates, chair of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas in El Paso knows that her students have the talents to go far in their careers but with such a heavy workload being full time students, they do not have time outside of school for extracurricular activities to gain skills companies are looking for. Working together with different companies, she has started to set up paid positions for her students to obtain those outside the classroom extra-curricular skills. With extra help and mentoring more women and those of color can get the motivation they need to pursue their degrees in Computer Science. As Juan Gilbert says “Diverse minds will give us the best solutions to problems”.
