My Discourse Communities -Genesis

Reading/ Learning about what is a discourse community and seeing some examples has been very interesting. I learned that I am part of at least five discourse communities:

The first and must important discourse community to which I belong is my religion. I am one of Jehovah Witness along with my family. Although anybody can learn about the bible and become one of Jehovah’s Witness, I learned the “language” from my parents since I have been visiting the congregations since I was a baby. One of the most exiting and very important things we do is the door to door witnessing/preaching. Although some people might get annoyed by it, others are very thankful that we go to their house and help them understand their own bible and how it can help them with daily situations they never though they could used the bible for.

Second, I am part of the Dominican discourse community. For the most part (because it might vary significantly depending on the region) I can say that I am able to understand a lot of the Dominican expressions, food, and jargons.

Third I am part of, what I would call, a very exclusive discourse community in the health care profession. I am an x-ray technologist and as such I am able to understand all the acronyms and short cuts that are use to describe all the positions and images that the doctors need in order to be able to interpret images correctly. In this community I am actually able to communicate with other x-ray technologies and understand short cuts and strategies that have been pass from x-ray tech to x-ray tech.

Forth , I work for CityMD urgent care and after reading the articles I have concluded that when you work for cityMD you also have to become part of their discourse community in order to be efficient at your job. For example, one of the things I had to learned to efficiently do my job was learn how they implemented a system of flags in order to communicate. We use this flags to signal what doctor should see what room, whether or not the doctor has been in the room, whether or not the patient vitals have been taken, etc.

The fifth community I have recently joint is this class. You better be sure that if tell my dad ” you are part of the Dominican Discourse community” he will not have a clue of what that is.

Ha! Be nice to your poor Dad ;-). These are all fascinating and it will be interesting to see which one you choose to write about. Even more interesting is that you went from a couple of very big primary discourse communities (Jehovah’s Witness, Dominican), to a specific profession (xray tech) to an even more specific job location. And yes, a class absolutely is, although with asynchronous classes, I always have a hard time thinking of it that way. But you’re right! Good work!
