TEDTalk Template analysis worksheet

Purpose of the TEDTalk overall: To teach people how to speak in a way that will make people listen to them.

INTRO:
  • What is the first thing the presenter says? A quote & who said it, an analogy, a detailed description, a question.
The human voice is an instrument we all play and it has the power to start a war and convey affection.

But people don’t listen to you.

  • What is the first image?
The first image is of a woman being shocked at what the man whispered to her.
  • Main point of the intro.
We have speaking habits that make people not want to listen to us.
BODY:
  • What image starts this section? Is it tied to another quote or description or question?
Stock photo of a person whispering to someone and the listener being shocked at what she heard. This is the photo that is shown when the speaker talks about one of the “deadly sins” which is gossiping.
  • Point 1 (personal experience, observation, example)
The reason why people don’t want to listen to us is because we speak negatively and seem negative to and towards the people who we want to listen to us. People don’t like listening to negative things that cannot be improved, and they won’t listen to people who think and act negatively towards them. No one likes being lied to either.
  • Point 2 (personal experience, observation, example)
HAIL which stands for Honesty, Authenticity, Integrity, and Love. These are the four cornerstones that we should stand on if we want people to listen to our speech.

And prevent us from committing these deadly sins.

  • Point 3 (personal experience, observation, example)
This section starts with a picture of a toolbox and brings back to the idea that your voice is an instrument.

The way a voice sounds also affects if and how people will listen to them.

People vote for presidents with a deeper voice because it is associated with power.

Research shows that we like voices that sound smooth, rich and warm.

People get bored listening to people with a monotonous voice, a voice without prosody.

If you end every sentence as if it were a question, then people would be confused.

Speaking slowly helps emphasize the words you spoke slowly.

Speaking with a relatively higher pitch than your normal voice helps you sound more animated.

You can excite people by speaking loudly and command attention by speaking quietly.

  • Other points (personal experience, observation, example)
You can practice changing your voice to suit the purpose of your speech by doing vocal exercises. The speaker then demonstrates the exercises he performs before doing a speech.
CONCLUSION:
  • Image to lead into or start conclusion.
A blue oval that dims to black in the center with yellow words that states the seven sins that make people not listen to us. And an arrow points from it to the words not listening with bad acoustics underneath the arrow.
  • How does the image relate to the topic?
The diagram shows the problem is that people speak negatively to people who don’t want to listen. A problem which is worsened by the way a person speaks.
  • Final element: suggestion or advice about how to take what you’ve said and use it to their advantage, question for them to think about, quote & who said it, analogy.
If people were conscious when speaking, listening and designed the environment for sound, then understanding would become the norm.
