Think of times before technology was as it is today. It must’ve been very difficult back then as compared to now. I always questioned how they communicate, how they stayed entertained at times when they were bored, how much different was it from then to now? This is probably why a lot of older heads (Yes including my grandparents) don’t see why my generation is so addicted to technology in some way, and I believe it’s a lack of understanding ; almost even a barrier. I remember when I was younger, my grandparents never understood why my brother and I loved being on the game so much or even our phones. Always asking “Why are you and your brother always on the damn game?” or “The reason that you forgot is because of them damn games and phone”. It never made sense to me on why they disliked it so much, but now I understand that we grew up in different times. They grew up where if you wanted to go and see someone, you can’t facetime or video chat. You had to get up and walk forever to see someone. A time where they didn’t have smartphones and couldn’t text, but you had to use pay phones or thick brick house phones. Everything today is different in this technology world. I think they realize how much technology has impacted my future career and mental health now whether than before.
To begin with, lets speak on my early experience with technology. I remember waking up on mornings before I even had kindergarten, mornings when my grandma use to have Dora the Explorer on in the living room, or even Nick Jr. That was my early experience with technology, these TV programs taught me basic thinking skills, simple Spanish, and even simple English. I would sit there and instead of going to pre-school, I stayed home and learned with technology. Everyday at a young age I’ll sit there and watch these informative shows, learning something new day by day. Not only did Television help me learn at a young age, but it also kept me entertained and relaxed. Shows like Dora, Diego, and the Wonder Pets were both educational to me and entertaining. But the shows like Spongebob SquarePants, Wow Wow Wubzy, and Max and Ruby were shows that were put on to keep me quiet and entertained while my grandmother babysat two of my first “Friends” which were two hispanic girls named Yami and Yaciti after their day at school. On top of just television, my grandmother use to always tell me ” Go watch TV” when I got too hyper or annoying (which every kid does in time). It got so real to the point that my grandparents had me go on the computer and play educational games which helped me spell simple words such as “and”, “because”, “or” etc. Now, not everything was educational at such a young age but it definitely had a major impact on me while growing up. Like at the age that I’m speaking on was pre-k. This was only the beginning of my love for technology in an educational standpoint.
As school came into play we used technology in order to portray different concepts of learning. It wasn’t all about books anymore due to computers that was placed in classrooms. As I progressed from Kindergarten to 5th grade, I can see a big change in what we used in class. For example, in kindergarten the teacher would say “Ok kids, go get a book and sit on the rug” but as my school years progressed we heard less of that and more of “Go home and do research on the book” or “Go on a laptop”. Times has progressed and if you lose track of it, you can get lost. Now lets look at the present time, our classes are literally on a computer. No matter what we do, the times of the world is always advancing and leaving people behind if we stay centered onto the same repeating concept. And that’s what fascinated me about technology. How it upgrades consistently. Year by year, day by day, every minute someone is adjusting the way a certain product works to better benefit the consumer (in this case I’m a consumer). How does the computer perform tasks and how games are made. Also, at the same time around 8th graduation a question arrived in my head. “What am I going to do in the future?” and ” How can I make money to support myself and loved ones?” Then it hit me, Get into the technology field since it controls the world mostly video games and Computers. That thought of what I can do in the future had impacted my future thoughts and decisions as a whole. So What’s next for me?
I decided to attend Transit Tech Hs which revolves around technology hence the name. I went here with the mindset of learning more about computers, meaning the hardware and software. For one year, I learned how to use programs that makes graphs and diagrams of shapes and building certain structures in that program. It was a fun class for freshman year and it was great for a start. But the best classes that I took in Junior and Senior year is what made my future seem a lot more clearer. Junior year, I took a class based on the hardware part of computers. The different types of RAM, hard drive, CPU types, and even the wires used to connect the parts of the motherboard. We put computer parts together and of course took them apart just to put it back together. Overall, it was a fun experience and introduced us to the inside of the computer. Then, on senior year I started working on Cisco, which is a American company that develops and sells network hardware, software and etc. In this class, we used commands in order to set up security inside of the computer which was very fun. We learned how to use the command prompt to do so. All of this together with my drive for wanting to be successful helped me make one of the most important decisions in my life, what college would I attend and what major would I like to take up for 4 years. But with help from my teachers and loved ones, I selected City Tech and Computer Systems as my major. Now =, my goal is to make it past college in order to get my degree which will open up more job opportunities for me to receive. I enjoy technology as a whole and I hope to now get future jobs in the field that I love and make my loved ones proud.
Technology has been a part of my life since forever. Whether it’s to inform me about specific events in the world which is very useful, to simply making me happy or calming me down through gaming, TV, or even Music. All in all, technology is always changing and I don’t want to get lost in it, but instead wanna be the one to advance it some way or form. I hope to make a living from this computer idea and help impact the future, the same way that the technology had an impact on me.
