Journal 1 Our First Meeting

Internships,

I am doing my internship at onlyfinishes.com. It is a small private construction company dedicated to the finishes of homes. Located in Long Island, Only Finishes is comprised of 6 people. They focus on stucco, decorative plaster, polishing floor. They are primarily based in Long Island, but sometimes they cover New York City. Their clients vary between home owners, general contractor, businessmen and their social economic status are from middle class to high class. Only Finishes was founded in 2000 by its owner Julian Ocampo. At first, Only Finishes started with one employee, and little by little, the company has grown not just in people, but in contracts as well.

This application has the basic drawing tools like the main program of illustrator has such as: different shapes of brushes with different finishes, which are located on the left side of the screen. Every single brush you can adjust the size, opacity, color, angle, roundness. As the original program, in this application you can create layers as well.

Also, users can adjust shapes that can be colored and also by double clicking this figure you can stamp a shape in a different color. Another function, which I found very interesting, was the insertion of a photo, which subsequently can be manipulated.

Adobe Draw has grids of 30, 45 , and 90 degrees sensational to give perspective to the drawings. Moreover you can rotate the canvas.

What I found interesting is that you can fill an enclosed area by long pressing inside it.

Paper App. Report

At first glance, it seems that they have added more features to this application long time ago. I checked it, and did not see all these options. In my opinion, the drawing part was not easy to find, and it was not clear if it was there or not.

Some functions that can be found in Paper App are:

This is the main function of this application. The Paper provided is easy to handle in regards to drawing; moreover; you have access right away to the tools which also are very recognizable . The user can connect a virtual pencil to this application using Bluetooth so people make a more precise drawing. There are a total of nine tools and a palette to choose colors from. In this function you can write and take photos and then include them in your drawings as background or spotlight. Finally, you have the option to save it on your phone, share them through social networks and send it to different design programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator.

Spotlight details:

It helps the user to highlight a part of any photo that he/she wants. How does it work? You must first take or import a photo from your cellphone to the app., then it gives you the option to adjust the size of the photo and the spotlight option. When you  click  the latter, automatically the photo turns gray and now the user can use his/her your fingers to  point out the parts he or she wants to highlight. As soon as that is done, a circle appears with the original colors of the photography.

Make a list:

Users can type  a list of anything. Additionally, on the top of the list you can insert a drawing or a photo.

SAMSUNG TRIP

A fun experience happened to me in Samsung 837. I discovered new technology and design. Located in the heart of Meatpacking district Samsung 837 is a place in which you can have a virtual reality (VR) experience . I mean, here you can find the latest products and the latest Samsung technology that has in the market. This place is not like the others where you go and buy a phone. What they do is give you the opportunity to experience VR. For example: upon arriving at the place, one of the first experiences I had was the VR of a roller coaster in California. I was sitting on a chair which was moving according to the curves of the roller coaster. I had glasses on, and together with the movements of the chair was the perfect formula for  adrenaline rush.

They also have a virtual reality tunnel where you sit down and see a short video of different shots made in the world and outside in the space. In this mini room there was not movement so in my opinion  the roller coaster one was better.

Samsung 837 has a mix of classic and modern design, as they have a glass room on the first floor near the entrance where DJs play their music and give that chic atmosphere to the whole place. On the first floor, singers make their performances for free.

Passing by the DJs glass room there is a giant screen which is connected to a cell phone that is on the first floor, which takes selfies that later on were shown on the big screen. The interesting thing is that thousands of photos on Instagram formed the selfie that was taken with the cell phone.

There is also a gallery in which through many mobile, tablets and TV screens, project all the photos you have on Instagram And a female futuristic type of voice repeats the hash tags of several accounts in intagram at the same time. It was impressive and overwhelming but not doubt unique.

In general the whole experience was interesting, I notice that many branches of design were combined in this place, from architecture through interior, graphic and industrial design.

James Levin

Week 3,

The speech that James Levin gave us was very motivating in every sense of the word. Since the gentleman was building his career as a coach with the experience acquired in life.

At first, I thought that he had done a course in career coaching or something like that, but then he explained to us that he came to a moment of reconsideration about what he would keep doing in his life, and with the experience that he had gained over his years in this field, it was sufficient to become a great coach.

It was interesting the tips that he gave us such as: when he told us that if someone from the company asked us if we knew something ,we should say that we would go and find the answer it did not matter how long it took us to find it. The important thing was that we show that we solve problems, instead of saying that we did not know. To me it is very important since I am that kind of person that if you ask me something and I do not know, I usually tell the truth. In this case , it is to show that we are interested in learning, also we can figure  out things and that sooner or later would be appreciated.

Another tip that caught my attention was, when he said that we should take the lead and offer our help to do things that our boss does not like  so much to do, and that he would realize and appreciate it.

And finally, he recommended us to make connections by going out more and volunteering to work in companies or agencies. It was exciting to meet him.

 

As things in life

week 2,

As things in life, I have already spent several weeks in my search of an internship by all possible means; it has not been easy although I have been consistent with the applications. However last week I received a call from a Human Resources person of an advertising agency (Quartz agency) telling me that a recruiter had seen my profile in Beyond and was interested in interviewing me. When I talked to her she told me it was for a full time job at the agency…. for that reason I was in shock. First of all, because I found it amazing that you can access to great opportunities through a profile on a website that barely had my personal information and resume. Second, because it was easier to find a job than an internship …

Then, I decided to search for web design companies in NYC and found a rather long list, which I started to contact them sending them my resume, let’s see what happens.

Different organizations

week 2,

Another way to look for an internship was through a classmate who right now is interning at a company. He told me about Clickdaily. So I sent a message to them with a link to my portfolio website and my resume attached. Indeed, they were looking for interns but not in my field (web design). However they offered me to go to an interview with them if I was interested in graphic design. Hearing this made me very optimistic – imagine if this was happening at the beginning of the semester …I figured it would be that easy to find interviews with companies…. Oh surprise that I was given. After this I decided to apply to the companies I would like to work  for even it they were not of design. I started looking for large organizations such as: UN, UNICEF, Sony entertainment, Microsoft, among many others, and applied to all them. Besides that, I looked at the list of companies that the professor uploaded on blackboard and applied to those as well. And finally in Google , I searched for the best advertising companies in NYC and guided me to two lists that were uploaded one in Awwwards (a website for the best sites’ design in internet) and Redbooks.

 

 

At the beginning

Internships, Week 1,

First of all, I started to update my Linkedin account, then I just started not only to look through this but also I uploaded my resume on a website called Beyond. After a Search I did for a while, I found another websites and Apps called careerboutique.com , Indeed, Zip recruiter, Internship.com, StartWire and the one that I use more which is Glassdoor. They all handle the same type of search regarding the internships available in the market. I scrutinize these pages and Apps trying to get opportunities in my field. I dedicated myself to look for the most optioned internship in web design and apply to each of these even while I was at work. Some of them are easy to apply for , you just have to fill out your personal information and upload your resume , that’s it. Others are more complicated, with more steps and not so easy to fill out through a cellphone, these had to wait until I got home and did it in my desktop. Most of them sent a confirmation message that they have received the application, others you have to assume the application was sent. Since the beginning of the semester, I’ve been sending applications to many places that I cannot remember how many were in total.

Desired Internship

Week 1,

I would like to find an internship in UI/UX  or Web design in which I can expand my knowledge in this field, as well as I can  help the community. From some time ago I’ve felt inclined to Community aid ; for this reason, I’ve been looking in the website of some global non-profit organization also n the US  government site to see if I can find an opportunity.
