Due Tuesday, 9/21/20. For this week’s writing assignment, take a look at the picture below called “Sentences.” Read every sentence in the picture. As you read, pay attention to your own stream of consciousness – what are the thoughts that pop into your head? For full credit, respond to all 4 of the following items.
- Record two observations about the sentences in the picture – what do you notice / what’s something you find interesting / what popped into your head / what stood out.
- Choose one of the sentences in the picture (do NOT choose the same sentence as anyone else). Type the sentence out “in quotes”, and then answer the following questions:
a. Is it a statement (as discussed in class)? Explain why or why not.
b. Is it true or false? Explain in everyday English why or why not. - Make up a sentence that you believe would fit into this picture.
- What connection (if any) does this assignment have to do with the work we are doing in class?
- Extra Credit. Choose one of your classmates’ sentences (item #3 above) (if someone else has already responded to the sentence, please choose another). Reply to their comment – explain why you think the sentence fits in the picture, tell us whether or not it is a statement, and whether or not it is true.
1.a) The sentence is an Aharmanite. It reminds me of reading the Sheherezade’s The Arabian Nights which I never finished because before the end, I fall asleep. b) The sentenced is stretched or strange? In this condensed composition both variants are possible.
2. a) “Ce n’est pas un phrase” – This is a statement because it has a subject and a verb. b) Similar like: “This is true”, or “this is not true”, or “A parent cares of me”. A statement, “Ce n’est pas un phrase”, is true (although it claims to be false).
3. The poster is spectacular.
4. I guess some of the statements relate to the chapter 2 about Logic, so the in this exercise we are trained how to make a true or false statements.
5. My daughter said, “Yellow is my favorite color.” Is it a statement? I would say yes, because she chose yellow out of all color they exist, and its her personal perception and confession. I believe that a statement does not need to be universally recognized as being true.
“This sentence does not exist until it is read” is very witty. It is a statement because it is in fact true. It is true because the reader doesn’t know of the sentence’s existence until it is in fact, read. “This sentence has no verbs” is a sentence that would belong on this poster. Statements in linguistics and in math are a form of communication. Language allows us to communicate and in the case of logic, it is the same thing. Instead of a spoken string of phrases, we use statements to discern whether or not something is true or false.
“This sentence has no verbs” Yea I also think this sentence belongs here because it is a statement that can prove to be true or false. and the statement is false coz ‘has’ is the verb of that sentence.
1) I find the sentences and their stacking interesting in that it conveys the nature of sentences as though they are simply collections of words (that could either be true or false) and the simplicity made me think about the basic goal of written language which is, at a basic level, to convey a message. Even a few spelling and grammar errors, small font and written upside down didn’t take away from the messages being easily communicated.
2) “This sentence does not exist until it is read”
I chose this sentence before seeing Rachel’s post! However, I actually had a different interpretation. This sentence is a statement because it is a declaration that can be either true or false. My viewpoint on this (its a tricky one) is that this statement is false: given this sentence is written into the picture, this sentence exists, even if its not read.
I did some research into this notion and found a really interesting article from 2002 about the work of the late physicist John Wheeler:
https://www.discovermagazine.com/the-sciences/does-the-universe-exist-if-were-not-looking
I particularly found remarkable the following sections:
“At every moment, in Wheeler’s view, the entire universe is filled with such events, where the possible outcomes of countless interactions become real, where the infinite variety inherent in quantum mechanics manifests as a physical cosmos. And we see only a tiny portion of that cosmos. Wheeler suspects that most of the universe consists of huge clouds of uncertainty that have not yet interacted either with a conscious observer or even with some lump of inanimate matter. He sees the universe as a vast arena containing realms where the past is not yet fixed.
Wheeler is the first to admit that this is a mind-stretching idea. It’s not even really a theory but more of an intuition about what a final theory of everything might be like. It’s a tenuous lead, a clue that the mystery of creation may lie not in the distant past but in the living present. “This point of view is what gives me hope that the question — How come existence? — can be answered,” he says.”
Maybe I’ll take physics next semester to learn more 🙂
3) This is sentence jumbled
4) I think this assignment is having us think about the meaning of collections of words which, given we are somewhat bombarded by information during daily life, we might not stop to think critically about their form and resulting validity. *If* only the rules of inference were utilized more often during the past few years (P), *then* [too many thoughts here AND too small of a character limit…] (Q).
5) I’ll respond to Jaroslav – the sentence fits in the picture, it is a statement and the poster is spectacular 🙂

1. Two observations that stand out to me based on the sentences in the picture are that one, the sentences are either parallel or perpendicular to each other since each sentence is written in a vertical or horizontal position. This, I think, makes it easier to keep track of what you just read whereas if sentences were written at an angle, I wonder how that would affect our comprehension and the readability of the page in general. My second observation is in response to the sentence, “This hamburger is delusional.” Is it the only statement that is not explicitly about a sentence? No…I just realized “interjection!” Is written too.
2a. “This sentence serves no purpose.” It is not a statement because it is not definitively true or false. There is no way to assert that this sentence is true or false.
b. I think this sentence is false. It serves a purpose in the overall layout of the picture, as
it’s like a puzzle piece to a larger image. Without this sentence, there would be a blank spot
there, unless it were filled with another sentence.
3. This this sentence sentence has has each each word word written written twice twice.
4. I believe the connection to our work in class has to do with precision and specificity. When I think about truth tables and logic, I consider how order impacts the final answer. We have to be very precise with our words and ideas, no matter how small they may seem. For
example, sentences that speak to grammar, we can generally get the context of them or
understand their meaning even if there is an error. In truth tables and with the use of operators though, I don’t feel like there is a margin of error or room for opinion. I think what
we’re doing in class is objective whereas some of the sentences in the image were not, and
when it comes to logic, there is a specific order that one must follow in order to reach the
desired or true result.
“This this sentence sentence has has each each word word written written twice twice.”
– It fits because many of the sentences convey a direct relation to a visual pattern within that sentence.
– I picked this sentence because I originally had thought about doing something similar.
– It is a True Statement
1. Two observations
– One thing I noticed is that there are far more sentences written in black over sentences written in blue green.
– Something I found interesting was that I found myself trying to figure out if the sentence was true, example the sentence that said ” This sentence contains exactly fifty-two characters.” is true only if you count the spaces as a character.
2. Sentence
” This sentence is almost illegibly small”
– I chose this sentence because out of all of them it interested me most because I had to SUPER zoom in to be able to see it.
a & b explained (Is it a statement & Is it true or false)
In out textbook a statement is define as ” a sentence or a mathematical expression that is either definitely true or definitely false.” When I first chose this sentence(as it interested me most), I was ready to state that it was a statement, but the word “almost” makes it subjective. I feel a statement would be “This is illegibly small” because you can decide if it is true of false. The word almost in this sentence makes me believe it wan be both, true and false, making it not definitely one or the other for this reason I would say it is NOT a statement
3. Make up a sentence
“This Sentence Starts with This”
4. Connection
– The connection to me comes from looking at these sentences through a more critical lens and analyzing if they are true or false. There are sentences we consider to be statements because they seems true to us and just because they seem true doesn’t automatically make them a statement. It is more about finding what is definitely true or definitely false, over steering towards more ambiguous sentences.

– It is a True Statement
1.Two observations I noticed was that some sentences are black and others are blue. Also some are bold and others are not . The main sentence that stood out to me was “ This sentence wants a hug”, because it reminded me of self love.
2. “THiS SeNTeNCe HaS No CaPiTaLiZed VoWeLs.”
A & B. This is a statement because it can be concluded to be 100% true. The word “no” gives off that it can either be true or false. I believe it is true because the vowels i,e,a,o are indeed all lowercase.
3.This sentence is two seconds old.
4.This assignment has a connection to the work we are doing in class because it makes us think outside the box and analyze these sentences deeper. We have to note that word and word choice do matter.During class, we practiced identifying whether some sentences were statements or not. We also had to identify whether the sentences were true or false. Therefore, this assignment was a little practice for us .
1.many of those sentences are incomplete, a lot of them are upside down which makes it difficult to read and a lot of them make no sense to me.
2″This sentence has only one spelling error” It is a statement because it can be proven to be either true or false.
this is false statement because I couldn’t find any spelling mistake.
3. This hamburger is smaller compare to rest of them.
4. This assigment can help us to create staement by ourselves with those incomplete sentences and finding the differnece between statements and non-statement
