My Growth
Before I had even entered the classroom for English 1101, I knew from the start that I was going to hate it. I had already had a terrible experience with this same English class at a previous college and it affected my gpa so negatively that I knew this experience would probably be no different. I felt so pressured to get an A because I want to be a nurse and an A grade is basically the only way in there. When assigned my first paper I had no idea what I was going to write about, I didn’t understand the reading nor the terms it used, I knew I was in trouble. To my surprise though, with a lot of rereading, asking questions, and listening to my classmates thoughts, I wrote a pretty decent essay. It was decent enough that my professor (you Dr.Hall!) used my essay as an example for the class, I couldn’t have been more proud of my writing than I was that day. In English 1101, I feel like I had the most growth as a writer, but it did however continue into English 1121.
From the very beginning of this semester I knew all of my essay needed to have “more of me” in them. I’ve always struggled adding my personality and personal thoughts into my writing for the simple fact that I always got bashed for doing so in high school. My teachers use to just want the answers to the prompt and nothing more, but now in college I finally had the chance to add my own style to my writing. Because of teachers like the ones I had, I hated to write and I never thought that I could write a good essay, but the real problem was that I was never writing about something I was interested in and I never had a teacher who wanted more than just the basics of the prompt.
I find that I’m most driven to write when I have opportunity to give my opinion, when I can explain my life experiences or when I’m passionate about a topic like the community. I like to write for any audience of individuals that are open minded and are willing to debate or give feedback. One of my strengths that I learned as a writer this semester was being able to go more in depth with my writing giving my readers more detail. In one of my very first essay about education I said “being that I live with my Puerto Rican side of the family, I felt as though I was missing out on the experiences my other culture could offer me,” but there was not much to follow up on this quote. When I revised this essay I was able to add more details that could help my readers better understand my cultures by giving them scenes like when I said “I remember when I was younger I would walk into the room sometimes and see my father on the floor praying and would walk right up next to him pretending to pray just like him.” In this quote my readers can now have more of an insight on how I still got to experience my Palestinian culture as I grew up seeing my father practice Islam even though I lived in a Puerto Rican household.
Another strength I acquired this semester is being able to better organizing my writing so that my ideas flow without any disruption. In my gentrification memo I was able to end my paragraphs and follow them up in the following paragraph. For example I ended my first paragraph by asking my readers “why is Brooklyn being so gentrified?” I then followed this question up by saying “I don’t think there is one real explanation for why people come to live in Brooklyn and gentrify it to their liking. There are so many factors that contribute to the gentrification of what was once Brooklyn.” Here I am able to give my readers some food for thought as I question what they may feel and then give them some facts that can add to or change their view.
My strengths have become writing techniques that I will need to keep enhancing to better my writing because with each assignment comes a different mindset and skills needed to complete it. Although I have grown this semester I still have some weak aspects that I will continue to work on. A lot of the times before I start my writing I overthink it, I take a simple assignment and turn it into something so stressful that it makes it harder for me to focus on what it is that I have to do.
My growth as a writer began at the beginning of the semester and will continue to grow outside of the classroom. As I said in my education essay “everyday is a new learning experience for me” and that entails not only my life experiences, but also the skills I learn in class. This is just the start to me becoming a better writer, the best is yet to come. I want to be remembered as a writer who once wrote mediocre essay that didn’t make it out of the hands of the teacher to then becoming a writer who is constantly improving with each writing.

Dear New Yorkers,
Nowadays with advanced technologies it is easier for construction industries to build buildings, and because of that cities are evolving to bigger and bigger cities everyday coming, but they also bring disadvantages. New York one of the biggest cities of the United States, has many problems that evolving cities encounter during their evolution like noise pollution. Noise pollution can be solved or relive with eco ideas and new instruments that we have today, or that can be develop by the industries themselves.
Noise pollution is one of the main problems that me and all New Yorker are experiencing every moment of our life. All of us can act differently of what the problem is, like people can install noise cancelling windows and doors, which are very expensive, or they just must deal with it. All New Yorkers that do take the train have to deal with the enormous sound that the train makes while moving in the railroad. All of this can seem trivial but can bring to sides effects. Noise pollution is more than just an annoyance; in fact studies have shown that noise pollution can damage physiological and psychological health, it can cause hypertension, it can increase stress levels and anxiety, and even lead to coronary artery disease. Children living in high noise pollution areas have delayed reading ages and diminished attention levels. What’s more, people exposed to long-term noise pollution often experience noise-induced hearing loss. Through the years there have been many experiments on the effect that noise pollution has on people. Exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been shown to cause a range of health problems ranging from stress, poor concentration, productivity losses in the workplace, and communication difficulties and fatigue from lack of sleep, to more serious issues such as cardiovascular disease, cognitive impairment, tinnitus and hearing loss. In 2011 the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report titled ‘Burden of disease from environmental noise’. This study collated data from various large-scale epidemiological studies of environmental noise in Western Europe, collected over a 10-year period. The studies analyzed environmental noise from planes, trains and vehicles, as well as other city sources, and then looked at links to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, sleep disturbance, tinnitus, cognitive impairment in children, and annoyance. What the study has found is that, it is estimated that daily lost from environmental noise in the western European countries are 61 000 years for ischaemic heart disease, 45 000 years for cognitive impairment of children, 903 000 years for sleep disturbance, 22 000 years for tinnitus and 587 000 years for annoyance. If all of these are considered together, the range of burden would be 1.0–1.6 million. This means that at least 1 million healthy life years are lost every year from traffic-related noise in the western European countries.
Today there are many ways which can help us reduce noise pollution. Many of them are simple and others a little more complicated but with the right approach all of them can be applied in our daily lives. A list of methods to help reduce Noise Pollution are: turn off appliances at home and offices, shut the door when using noisy machines, use earplugs, lower the volume, stay away from noisy area, follow the limits of noise level, control noise level near sensitive areas, go green by planning trees, create healthy noise to eliminate unwanted noise, use noise absorbents in noisy machineries, use proper lubrication and better maintenance, notify authorities about disobedience of noise rules, regularly check noise levels.
There are many ways of reducing noise pollution levels but, the first one that I would recommend to our city mayor is to plant trees which help to reduce sound. “It’s the sound produced by the wind passing through the leaves that really helps muffle noise” explains Robert Smith, a staff arborist for the Arbor Day Foundation. As a bonus, trees also provide habitat for birds, whose twitterings add to the pleasant background sounds. A properly designed buffer of trees and shrubs can reduce noise by about five to ten decibels or about 50 percent as perceived by the human ear, according to the USDA National Agroforestry Center. Trees also do make the city look greener, because what I see when I walk in the streets are just buildings, so it’s a good way to make the city look cozier.
Almost everyone in the world is affected by noise pollution. We can bring this to an end. Noise pollution is a problem that is and will be continuing to affect us if we don’t do something about it. We can make our voices heard by everyone in the world if we really want, and we can make all world stop for a minute and really think about this problem and how to solve it, so why shouldn’t we do it. Let’s make our voices heard by everyone in the world and especially to the people like us that do experience noise pollution every day. So, I’m appealing to the New Yorkers to help me get this message to the Mayor and all people in the world, if we do show lot of interest on the problem I’m sure that he will help us solve it, and everyone will try to do the same, one day maybe all people in the world will not have to experience noise pollution. Everyone in the world and by that, I mean nature and animals too, will only benefit when this will come to an end. Please share this idea to everyone that you know and let’s make it happen!!!
Sincerely,
Giuseppe Biondi

Looking back on my writing in this english class and the previous english class i took, I have noticed just how much my writing has improved since the beginning of the semester and that first assignment. In the beginning , I was being a writer that didn’t know what he was talking about in his essays and over thinking everything. Then I learned how to write in my own style and quickly writing an essay that should make sense on a certain topics. The work I’ve written and selected for this portfolio show that I have improved dramatically as a writer progress at the end of this semester. In the beginning of the quarter there were many things that I had to revise in my essays, and they took me twice as long to write as well. However, by the end of the quarter writing, although not quite second nature to me, has become much simpler and my writing in general has become much stronger as well.
There was a lot of things that I have learned this semester. One was trying not to do my papers last minute, and stop trying to make them perfect near the end and half the time it doesn’t work out for me because I simply didn’t have enough time, so instead I usually start writing my essay as soon as it is assigned to me, so far it has become so much easier for me to finish and feel done with it. The portfolio(of my essays/projects) that I’ve chosen not only shows how I have changed as a writer, but it also shows how I got better. My portfolio has the best work I have written, but also the mistakes I have done in the past , and through revising I was able to see the mistakes that I make almost every time I write an essay, Now I’m going to quote something from my drug essay and relate it to this reflection. “ Most of the drugs mentioned can easily be accessed by going to the doctor and getting prescriptions for it even if your not in pain(this can quickly be abused in a way to get more of the drug you want), while doing so they also recommend more than the safe dose you’re suppose to get so that is another unfortunate cause, Another is how potent the drug is. Some drugs are stronger than others and can make you develop cravings for it which prevents people from having a normal life without the drug(which they are addicted to)”. As you see here, I actually learned how to use information from another text and summarize simply all without using the act of plagiarism. Also I knew what i was talking about, before all I did was rush my essays and hand it in like it was another day at school. Also I learned how to use real life examples of certain topics and relate it to my essays/projects that has a certain criteria for what you are writing about. One essay he had to write about struggles we had in life and other things. “Sometimes in life I always get I never give up and that’s just how it is . But it wasn’t motivation that helped me , it was the effort that lead me to that .A quick example of this would be the time Where I was walking upstairs to my next class which was in the 8th floor, I refuse to take the elevator that day because there was a lot of people in. But as I was going upstairs and I was tired but as I went up the stairs I saw a 10 dollar bill below the staircase where almost nobody could see it unless u looked a certain angle”. This example from my “Don’t Give Up Essay” shows a good example of relating to real life struggles/motivations and how I wrote it in a good way to build on the rest if my essay which is like the building blocks that leads to my main point in my essay.
Basically the writer is saying about how “Lemonade” made use of explaining the black female’s body. The author explains how Beyonce’s album attracts people of black females(and make them the norm) and how the black female body comes in all sizes, shapes, and textures with all manner of big hair and also to challenge the devaluation and dehumanization of the black female body The writer makes me have an understanding of the picture of a black woman’s life which was interesting. The author also portray black women to always be the victim and explains why.
What I learned from the article is that “Lemonade” is showing a clear message to the readers of what black female goes through in this time and the history of it .
Also based on their writing, I would like to use the element of meaning in my own writing because in this article it gives more meaning of beyonce and how black women are portrayed as the victim. One bad thing I wouldn’t add is how long the story is. To me it simply would make me lose interest if an article has a lot of pages unless it has a good title that is eye catching. Another is 3 different things that relate to each other just like the article, which was beyonce herself, black women and lemonade.

Don’t give up and in the end it will show
Sometimes in life I always get I never give up and that’s just how it is . But it wasn’t motivation that helped me , it was the effort that lead me to that .A quick example of this would be the time Where I was walking upstairs to my next class which was in the 8th floor, I refuse to take the elevator that day because there was a lot of people in. But as I was going upstairs and I was tired but as I went up the stairs I saw a 10 dollar bill below the staircase where almost nobody could see it unless u looked a certain angle. I picked it up… I felt like the luckiest person in that staircase, It must have been a coincidence that day because I forgot my money at home.Going to the main story of my luck, the time this happened to was actually recent, When I passed my Computer System Technology class. So it was the beginning of the semester of 2018 and this class was required for my major so I said to myself “ This class should be easy”. I was wrong(like really wrong) ,but that didn’t stop me from having doubts. It was an 8 AM class so that wasn’t really a good choice but I wanted to get out early so that was the trade off. At first the class wasn’t too difficult the following 2 months because we were doing basic stuff. But after that it was complex and there was a lot of rules to cover when coding, and I noticed people around me were far worse where I was. Some people would look over my screen after showing the professor my program that runs correctly. Sometimes they would ask me for help and I helped them but it was still difficult for them( I don’t blame them). But overall i knew what I was doing even though it was difficult to comprehend the material being given to me.I knew I couldn’t give up on this class because it was a class for my major in this school. Sometimes I would leave early because I already did all the classwork which was a good thing. Fast forward to November 6(which was the last day to drop a Class), I was debating whether or not to drop the class because I didn’t really like my major anymore(Computer Science) because I don’t think I would like sitting behind a chair just typing 100’s of lines of code for a complicated program while also being behind a computer screen all day long, I should’ve thought of that sooner but it didn’t come to mind until it was too late. I decided not to because that would’ve been a waste of time and money. The next day out of the original 30 students that signed up for the class only 8 people remained. But my friend that was in that class actually dropped it since it was too difficult for him , so basically he gave up since he probably wasn’t motivated enough to finish and pass the class. It was sorda disappointing that my only friend in that class decided to withdraw but it was his poor decision. Furthermore I had a test coming which I didn’t know about because I was too lazy to check the syllabus, I didn’t know what was going to be on the test so I just accepted my fate that I was going to fail the test. The day I took the test, I didn’t expect it to be almost the same exact things we had to as classwork, So I dodged a bullet on that one and I passed the test for it.So finally it was near the semester and I had to take my final. Suddenly this person who I thought supposedly dropped the class showed for the final after nearly being absent for 2 months, I honestly thought he gave up on the class My professor was actually quite mad at him but he couldn’t do anything so he just let him take the test, When the test started he only took a couple of minutes it finish it and left the class, even though there was around 15-30 lines of code that you have to write down for a few problems. One was about making a program that is able to calculate the GPA of your classes by entering the amount of classes, the grade for each class, and the amount of credits each class was worth. Another was typing the Radius and the Height for a given shape and putting the formula for each shape to find the volume of all the shapes, all of this was basically impossible to write under 20 minutes). Some people had to resort to cheating( No names) by looking up the program for the specific problem, the professor was just using his laptop and actually caught someone using their phone, He gave him a warning instead of giving him a 0 ( which was generous.), I said to myself “Wow, he was lucky”. I give him some credit though for building the motivation to cheat on a test which your not suppose to do .So after finishing I just went home to sleep and hoped I passed the class. Then I checked my grade and I got a B+ thinking I would get a C or maybe lower. But in the end I passed.
Overall life isn’t about the motivation on things you want but how much you effort you put in to get there .

Don’t do Drugs or Die
Every day, a lot of people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids. “The misuse of and addiction to opioids—including prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl—is a serious crisis in the United States that affects everyone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that the total cost of prescription opioid misuse alone in the United States was 1 trillion dollars since 2001 including the costs of healthcare, addiction treatment, and criminals”. Before the 80s-90s this wasn’t even happening and everybody was fine, So what happened?
How did all of this began? “Well In the late 1990s, pharmaceutical companies reassured the medical community that patients would not become addicted to prescription opioid pain relievers, and healthcare providers began to prescribe them at greater rates. This subsequently led to widespread diversion and misuse of these medications before it became clear that these medications could indeed be highly addictive. Opioid overdose rates began to increase. In 2017, more than 47,000 Americans died as a result of an opioid overdose, including prescription opioids, heroin, and illicitly manufactured fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. That same year, an estimated 1.7 million people in the United States suffered from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, and 652,000 suffered from a heroin use disorder”. Based on the text you can see that drug overdoses are a huge problem in the United States, you can easily get addicted to it, Most of the drugs mentioned can easily be accessed by going to the doctor and getting prescriptions for it even if your not in pain(this can quickly be abused in a way to get more of the drug you want), while doing so they also recommend more than the safe dose you’re suppose to get so that is another unfortunate cause, Another is how potent the drug is. Some drugs are stronger than others and can make you develop cravings for it which prevents people from having a normal life without the drug(which they are addicted to). Biologically most drugs affect the brain’s circuit by flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine. Surges of dopamine in your brain circuit cause the reinforcement of pleasurable but unhealthy activities, leading people to repeat the behavior again and again.Which what causes addiction in the first place (Learned in Psychology).
Before, the government overall is not doing a lot to help prevent this epidemic from getting worse but instead chooses to do other unimportant things like getting involved in another war that has nothing to do with us, increasing taxes, and increasing the military budget which is more than the 7 next countries budget combined . The amount of people getting killed by overdoses of certain drugs just keep increasing and there seems to be nothing being done to help prevent this tragedy.
Now, Donald Trump(our current president) has shed some light on the opioid crisis happening in the United States and has declared the opioid addiction as a national emergency in 2017. One year later he signed a bill to promote the development of non-addictive pain medications. It’s a right direction towards ending this crisis but there still needs to be a lot of work done in order to make a dent on the staggering statistics of drug overdoses
Also drug addiction isn’t just a problem , it’s also a proven disease like cancer, diabetes etc, and if left untreated(like any other disease) it could be fatal and cause death. But unlike other diseases having mostly physical health symptoms, drug addiction is all mostly emotional and social based. This drug addiction can destroy friendships, family, maybe lose their jobs and harm themselves physically also or harm others since they end up crazy or turn into a “crackhead”.
Also these days, one big influence that is probably increasing the amount of drug use leading to the increase of drug addicts and drug related deaths is music. Since the 80’s there has been a lot of music that has been growing popularity and mention drugs and during that time was the, which helped fuel substance abuse since people thought it was “cool” to use drugs and it killed a lot of people in mostly poor neighborhoods.Crack was one of them, it is basically a free base form of cocaine that can be smoked. This drug was cheaper than regular cocaine, so this was bought and distributed to mostly low income neighborhoods in cities in the United States. One rap artist was 50 cent. 50 Cent actually wrote his experience selling drugs into his songs. In the song “Corner Bodega,” he raps about his young years of being a drug trafficker, and he spoke about being a cocaine dealer in his other song “Ghetto Qu’ran.”. Another could be depression, ironically crack can give you depression after the effects wear away, but depression can make you take drugs as a way to cope with it, or maybe being around drugs make you do it. Let’s say you in a party filled with delicious fried food and everyone’s eating it.This makes you want to eat that too. It is sorda the same with drugs, but drugs have more consequences that will impact your life in many ways negatively. Another could be a way to deal with their personal problems that deal in family, school, job etc.
But some people don’t know how to treat drug addiction and they end up dying. The first way to prevent overdose when it comes to prescription drugs, like opiate painkillers, is to follow prescription dose described by the doctor exactly. This alone can make it less likely that addiction will develop in the first place.
For people who are already addicted to drugs, the best way prevent overdose is to get into and complete a rehab program to achieve recovery from addiction, Even though the recovery rate for rehab is low there is still a chance that you should go to it in order to straighten out your life and get it back into the right path like Macaulay Culkin( kid from Home Alone).
Overall, please know what you’re doing when taking prescription. Measure the right dose, be sure it’s the right amount, Afterall please be a regular working person instead of a statistic of a great drug epidemic killing lots of people who made mistakes using drugs and abusing them in the first place.

The Black Lives Matter movement is a campaign for violence, racism and prejudice acts towards the black race. After years of numerous senseless killings as well as police brutality being directed at this particular race stirred up the idea and along with that came some very brave dedicated activists.to fight for what is happening in our community and the people who’s skin colors are affected by it. Around the time the social movement started back 2013 the people decided it was enough. Rather you knew who or even if you did not know who Sandra Bland or Trayvon Martin were amongst others, the affects of their passing’s have weighed on the entire community throughout the world. Mothers, fathers, uncles, nieces , nephews and sons are tragically murdered because of the color of their skin in which they cannot change, didn’t ask to have and should not be looked down upon or discouraged for, let alone be killed. So many legends before this movement put their lives and safety in danger so that equality is spreaded to everyone no matter their appearance or source of income and though America has grown as a nation from this it is still not all blue skies and sunny days. This senseless act of violence towards the black race has grown significantly within the past few years and it doesn’t get easier for anyone, it’s almost contagious. Singer/songwriter and vocalist Andra Day broke out in 2015 with her debut album Cheers to the Fall, along with this amazing hit album that charted 48 on billboard was a very popular inspirational song called “Rise Up”. This song was used in numerous platforms regarding the BLM movement and with it, uplifted millions of hearts around the world. The singer is known for her beautiful voice that falls into the Jazz/Soul R&B category and her ability to capture tears and chills from her listeners. Rise up was built on chills, in fact this song has unofficially become an anthem for empowerment and protests all around the globe all because of her lyrics. Someone to be considered a voice for the voiceless and using her platform to send a clear message while providing hope for those who may have lost their own. At the very beginning of the song she starts off by singing “You’re broken down and tired of livin’ life on a merry-go-round and you can’t find a fighter but I see it in you, so we gon’ walk it out and move mountains”. Andra Day refers to the continuous acts of violence and dehumanization African Americans face time and time again throughout history. As if it’s something the people within the black community cannot change or move forward from because the world is stuck in one mindset, that mindset being “this is how it’s always been, so this is what it will be” but then she reminds her listeners to be patient. To know that the time for a change starts with the people. For whatever reason they are unable to stand up for themselves possibly in fear of being unheard or ignored are people who stand with them and they are not alone. The tone of voice allows you to feel the hurt and the aching pain around the BLM issue and the way she feels about what seems impossible to overcome but not impossible at all. There is a tremendous comfort in hearing this song at a time when Arican Americans are feeling hopeless, it then gives them that fearlessness to be great and being true to themselves. In her chorus she says “I’ll rise up, rise like the day I’ll rise up I’ll rise unafraid I’ll rise up and I’ll do it a thousand times again, for you”, this is a clear message about how she is feeling on being silent about what’s happening around us and that she is not afraid and she will take a stand for whats right. Many African Americans are silent, they believe injustice to their race is to be expected and so it should not be challenged but Day expresses the exact opposite. No matter the costs no matter the risks she’s aware of the effects rising up has on everyone surrounded by the issue. Followed by that lyric she sings “i’ll rise up, rise like the day i’ll rise up in spite of the ache” in many cases for many causes all it takes is one person to help break the barrier, take action or see what needs to be done and Andra Day supplies her own voice so that it can be someone else’s in hopes that people will hear her and be inspired enough to stand on the issues they are passionate about and with doing so not being afraid.
This particular movement has become one of the many reasons African Americans are able to build up courage, courage that was taken away from them so long ago as well as for so long. Andra Day’s “rise up” became the anthem because it supports all people in whichever side of the movement your standing on. The voiceless, the fearful and the hurt are all encouraged in her lyrics to be fearless and to take those necessary steps for change to happen.
Almost towards the closing of her song she says “all we need, all we need is hope and for that we have eachother and for that we have eachother” and in a welcoming tone she invites her listeners to lean on one another through the dark times because that is all we need to achieve greatness with togetherness. Be a whole so that the chances are greater, the love is stronger, the cause is deeper and the feelings all mutual .This is something Andra Day emphasizes all throughout the song, she is vivid and demanding with her words. Not in a forceful manner but definitely an encouraging one, something to look forward to or be excited about. The Black Lives Matter movement matters because it is the black communities voice against acts of violence that happens based off skin color and stereotypes. It is a community fighting back from so much loss and suffering at the hands of people who do not want change just power. An influential person being Andra Day took her voice and used her platform to raise awareness about taking a stand aside from the risks or what people say. This movement might not have started with you specifically but it affects everyone because it could be you, your daughter, a friend of the family, your son. It is both uplifting and motivational to the cause in this on-going issue, the anthem of hope.
