I am majoring in communication design. This is my third year in this major. The reason I took the Topics in Graphic Design is because it is required. I didn’t even know what this class is about before. But after the first class, I found out that this class is to help us get ready for our career. This class is to answer questions we have about our future career as a graphic designer.
In the first class, each student had to ask a question about what they want to know about design career. There were topics about jobs in the field, experience, portfolio, internship, challenges and so on. Some questions were answered and some will answer in the future classes.
In order to get a job, the first thing we have to do is to prepare our resume and portfolio. We will have to send them out. If the company stratifies our resume and portfolio, we will be able to get into an interview. I also learned that what employer looking for in our portfolio is real work. And the way we can get real work is from our internship. By learning that, I would put more effort in my internship.
I learned that if we want to work for free lancing, we should develop our own style so that people would come look for you. If we are working for a company, our design should base on the company’s identity. Like McDonald, it is about red and yellow. We should not put too much of our own style in it.
I also learned different challenges that we would met in our career. We might run out of inspiration. We might not be able to finish our work before the deadline. We might also have different opinion with our clients. We need to know to communicate with the clients. And we have to be good at representing our work. We also have to learn how to deal with different situations.
