Overview

Basic Figure Proportions, Inside and Out

The first step to good figure drawing is good proportions. Today’s homework is designed to help you take that first step. Following the sequential instructions below, create 2 drawings. Reconstruct the 2 sets of diagrams introduced in today’s class and posted in Resources [inset link]: 1) the simplified skeletal diagrams and 2) the simplified full-body diagrams. Draw the three views—front, back, and side—of each set on 1 page of horizontal newsprint for a total of 2 drawings. Memorize by next week both sets of diagrams with accurate guidelines, measurements, and labels by practicing repeatedly on newsprint until you draw them easily by heart. Committing each figure’s proportions and measurements to memory takes about 6 practice attempts. Both sets will be in an upcoming pop quiz and on your midterm.
