Oxford Short Introductions

There were a lot of titles that called my attention and seem very interesting. For example, Angels, Anxiety, Sexuality, Nothing, Music, Photography, Beauty, etc. I didn’t read the all of theSe intros, but from the ones I did I enjoyed mostly Anxiety, and Beauty. From Anxiety I liked the line, “As we’ll see, anxiety isn’t merely normal, it is often an essential.” I never thought that in some cases anxiety is essential and now I wonder why is it. I also picked Beauty because it will speak about the different types of beauty that exist. I believe it is good for us to appreciate and learn about all kinds of beauty and not just one.

You can edit what you write but you can’t edit what you say

To me this means that as a communicator we are both free to speak and write how ever which way we would like to express our thoughts. However, once you’ve spoken your words you cannot take them back. Whem you write something even if it is getting published you have the advantage of being able to revise your writing before you publish it and edit it. you can even have some one else revise it for you to maybe catch a mistake you missed. you can than edit your writing and publish it to the media as a “perfect” piece of literature. As the saying goes words come and go, very true but once you spoken those words there is no taking back what escaped your lips. This is my opinion.

“City Limits” by Colson Whitehead

The written Piece in “City Limits” by Colson Whitehead is a fascinating experience of living life in the big city of NYC. He brings up many experiences and events that he remembers from living in NYC.  He also mentions in his own way how the city is so alive, how it is watching us everyday, and it is always changing. Commercial areas having thriving mom and pop stores that you used to go into, then eventually go out of business and are replaced with a corporate based store. Loads of money being pumped into cities and seeing it’s effect on the neighboring towns. Knowing the city is watching you even when you trim on an elevated pavement while wakling. The author makes me think of all my previous experiences of living in the city and I can fully relate to this. I would recommend this to anyone who still has a great appreciation for city life regardless of how much things change and for those who have not experienced living in the city before.
