Assignment 1, Part 5

Ink with value

Adding Value to your ink drawing
(I suggest doing the sketchbook and discussion assignment first.)

  • Refine and adjust your line drawing as needed. You may want to redo the ink or add different types of line techniques after doing your sketchbook assignment.
  • Add value with traditional materials such as ink washes, marker, pencil, etc.
  • Or add value digitally in Adobe PS/ or Procreate etc.
  • Consider Focal Points, Image Hierarchy, and Contrast.

EXTRA CREDIT Color Study
1. Choose your color palette. No more than 4 colors. You can work traditionally or digitally (black and white are givens). If you get stuck find a sample illustration that you like and select the colors. Find traditional materials that match the colors or work digitally and add the colors to your swatches in photoshop.

2. Add color to final art.

DUE NEXT WEEK:

  • Full Value Study shown separate and then show another version placed in the template.
  • Categorize your post FINAL ART, Week 5, in Works in Progress

Sketchbook Week 5, Playing with Value

This week in your sketchbook, we will practice creating value using pencil and ink.

SWATCHES

In this exercise try creating multiple steps in value, using a variety of mark making techniques in ink.  Notice in this set of swatches all of the different methods used to create value.

FIRST: Try creating value scales which move evenly from light to dark.  Begin with by using the swatches below as examples, but feel free to come up with your method of shading, and unique patterns textures and designs.

NEXT Create an abstract design and fill in the design using these different swatches of value.  Try patterns, stippling, hatching, and crosshatch.  Try ink wash techniques as well. POST your work Tagged Sketchbook, along with your thoughts on it how you accomplished the task.

Fill 3 pages in your sketchbook over the course of the week.

DO: After reading this post, choose an illustration which you feel makes strong use of value structures and tonal organization. Share it along with a few sentences about why you chose it, who the artist is, and how the artist uses value. Then answer the following questions.

  • Deconstruct the illustration:   Who created it and what process and media do you think they used?
  • What does Compositional Techniques does the illustrator use?
  • Why do you consider them effective?

Be sure to read eachother’s observations BEFORE posting your own. Remember… ITS A DISCUSSION. 🙂
