Sketchbook Week 4_Kiana

For this Sketchbook assignment I went with the Compositional Techniques, Directional Line, Negative Space and Balance Symmetrical. I chose these techniques because I find them to be useful and interesting. I think they will be beneficial to me in the future.

The first sketch is two Koi fish swimming. When reading the Chapter ‘Intro to Composition’, I thought the Directional Lines were interesting as I have never considered using the technique help with an artwork. The way the lines were shown in the chapter was helpful and I now understand how they can be used. Therefore, I used the technique in the first sketch to help me draw the koi fish swimming while also filling the lines.

The next sketch is a Raven on a tree stump, the Raven is placed on the right side of the frame to show Negative Space. Negative Space involves what you leave out, so I kept the left side of the frame empty. I think negative space is interesting because it really shows how least can be better, especially with the artworks by Aubrey Beardsley. I consider myself as a simple person therefore, Negative Space could be helpful to me when I create illustrations in the future.

The last sketch is a silhouette of a man fishing in a lake and land near him. I used Balance Symmetrical in this sketch because it is helps make the sketch unique. Balance Symmetrical arranges the elements equally with an imaginary line. The sketch has the silhouettes on top and bottom to display a reflection, I wanted to show the symmetry in that sense so the sketch can look equal.

Overall, the techniques were helpful to practice in this sketchbook assignment. I hope to continue using them in the future so I can become a better illustrator.

Week 4 Sketchbook

For this sketchbook assignment, I decided to draw three landscapes, but in an abstract design. The first image is of a futuristic wasteland filled with mountains of garbage. The second sketch I decided to do was a cityscape, but also drawn with abstract shapes and forms. My goal for this piece was to include perspective. Lastly, I drew a landscape with an entrance to a mysterious cave. I tried to include more natural elements such as the texture of the grass and trees in the foreground and background.

Week Three Sketchbook

For this sketchbook assignment, I chose three images of myself that I felt I could redraw and manipulate. For the first reference, there’s an image with me holding a pumpkin. To manipulate it, I turned the pumpkin into a bomb, gave myself a bandana, extra dynamite on my waist, and a spikey wristband.

For the second image, there’s a photo of me holding a microphone and laughing. To manipulate this image, I replaced the microphone with a sword and decided to add another sword on my back. I also added this material on my body to keep the sword on my back.

For the last image, I selected a photo of me in the airport holding my luggage. To manipulate this into my own, I added military equipment to my body to make it look like I was carrying the luggage for a reason. I added body armor, a belt with holsters, and a helmet.
