“The Little Mermaid” is a Danish literary fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The story show little mermaid live under the ocean. She is a princess and she has 6 elder sister. She is the youngest one in the family. She is a beautiful girl, the lower part of the body is fish tail. She save a prince from wrecked ship in ocean in her birthday. In that moment, she fall in love with the prince. However, the prince doesn’t know her save him. He misunderstand another girl save him from ocean. The little mermaid made a trade with sea witch. She use her voice as a payment to exchange a leg from sea witch. After she come to the land, she realize the prince fall in love with the girl who save him from the ocean. Also, he will get marry with her. Little mermaid break the heart. Before the day prince’s weeding day. All her sister rise up from under the ocean, and bring with the knife. They tell her that kill the prince, and use his blood to make her get back the tail. Then she can come back the sea. Yet, the little mermaid love prince so much. She doesn’t want to kill him. At last, she become foam, and disappear from the world.

Little mermaid:

beautiful, quiet and thoughtful, silent
she care nothing but for the beautiful flower in her garden and the handsome boy marble statue.
She like to hear about the world above the sea from her grandmother.
“she placed a wreath of white lilies in her hair, and every flower leaf was half a pearl. Then the old lady ordered eight great oysters to attach themselves to the tail of the princess to show her high rank.”
Prince:
16 years old
“Among them was a young prince, the most beautiful of all, with large black eyes; he was sixteen years of age, and his birthday was being kept with much rejoicing.”
Not a good man!!!! it can say it is a cheap man!!
- The little mermaid dance for prince in the party, “Every one was enchanted, especially the prince, who called her his little foundling;”
It mean, the little mermaid dance for prince. The little can not speak, he give her a name call little foundling. I don’t think it is a good name for a person, even a pet. In my opinion, this kind of name is same like call that person is a beggar.
- “The prince said she should remain with him always, and she received permission to sleep at his door, on a velvet cushion.”
It means the prince tell her that she should stay with him, allow her sleep outside his door of the bedroom. She doesn’t have bedroom, she only sleep on a velvet cushion. In this case, think the prince treat her as a pet, not a guest.
From chapter 18
- “As the days passed, she loved the prince more fondly, and he loved her as he would love a little child, but it never came into his head to make her his wife;”
4. “Do you not love me the best of them all?” the eyes of the little mermaid seemed to say, when he took her in his arms, and kissed her fair forehead.”
“Yes, you are dear to me,” said the prince; “for you have the best heart, and you are the most devoted to me; you are like a young maiden whom I once saw, but whom I shall never meet again. I was in a ship that was wrecked, and the waves cast me ashore near a holy temple, where several young maidens performed the service. The youngest of them found me on the shore, and saved my life. I saw her but twice, and she is the only one in the world whom I could love; but you are like her, and you have almost driven her image out of my mind. She belongs to the holy temple, and my good fortune has sent you to me instead of her; and we will never part.”
It mean, the prince fall in love with a girl who save him from the sea. Hoverer, he misunderstand the person. he think temple girl save his life. In prince’s mind, he think the little mermaid is a substitute to that girl.
From chapter 19
- “I must travel,” he had said to her; “I must see this beautiful princess; my parents desire it; but they will not oblige me to bring her home as my bride. I cannot love her; she is not like the beautiful maiden in the temple, whom you resemble. If I were forced to choose a bride, I would rather choose you, my dumb foundling, with those expressive eyes.” And then he kissed her rosy mouth, played with her long waving hair, and laid his head on her heart, while she dreamed of human happiness and an immortal soul.”
It show a prince have to take a ship make a travel to see a princess from other country. Because his parents’ order. He tell little mermaid that he doesn’t love that princess, because she isn’t that girl in temple. If he must chose one. He will choose little mermaid, because she look like that girl in temple.
- “ It was you,” said the prince, “who saved my life when I lay dead on the beach,” and he folded his blushing bride in his arms. “Oh, I am too happy,” said he to the little mermaid; “my fondest hopes are all fulfilled. You will rejoice at my happiness; for your devotion to me is great and sincere.”
It show the prince realize the princess is the girl in the temple who save his life. He fall in love with her immediately.
