Week 5 Sketchbook

For this sketchbook assignment, I filled up two pages with value studies. All studies start from a lighter shade on the left and gradually get darker the more to the right. My value study consists of vertical lines, cross hatching, circles, zig zag lines, waves, streaks of lines, swirls, stippling, and more. For my abstract design, I centered my abstract shapes around a rose. I used the stippling technique to add value and texture to the rose. I created vines spread out from the rose, but the vines contain abstract designs attached to them. For the background, I used stippling as well.

Week 8 Discussion

Tomer Hanuka uses digital tools to aid in composition by drawing over the original drawing with a digital pen and making corrections as they retrace. Hanuka also rotates the screen to be able to work on certain parts of the art piece that are difficult. By doing this, they are able to attain the desired composition. Hanuka uses layers to be able to draw over and color certain areas of the art piece without interfering with the other areas that need specific colors or any other special attention. The steps the artist use to execute this art piece is redrawing over the original sketch, using layers to draw different characters in different colors, and lastly using layers to color in the characters, the shadows, and background. The take-away from watching this artist at work is being as organized as possible when adding colors to art.

Week 6 Discussion

This art piece that contains an illustration using a limited color palette is by Tiago Galo in his Red and Blue Series. His striking images use red, blue, white and black and show off his style and his sense of humour in his artwork. Galo starts by using pencil to create the outlines and then colors it in Adobe Illustrator. The color techniques Galo uses is having the skin color be red and most of the colors be blue. He uses white for clothing and the sky. He uses black as details for pants, shoes, and hair. I consider these color techniques effective because every color is in perfect relation to each other and one color does not distract from the other.
