This illustration was done by Yusuke Murata. He made this piece digitally with the pencil and the inking pen tools along with adding monotone colors to add depth. This piece particularly catches my eye by how balanced every part of the drawing is from the background to the characters.
The techniques that Murata uses to make excellent art range from using complimentary shading, cross hatching, dynamic/action lines, foreshortening and proportional/exaggerated figures to demonstrate emotion or action. He is well-known for his wonderful character design and his ability to create dynamic poses.
These illustration techniques are effect because they compliment each other in both story-telling and world-building. You also see how fluid the scenery and characters are, giving a sense of harmony yet a sense of interest and eye-opening perception. You not only see combat happening in the middle of a city during a thunderstorm but you also see the expressions of the combatants and the helplessness in the civilian through just a single pose. The shading of the figures muscles and the reflection of the shadow all add realism to this single illustration.
Looking upon this work, i realize there is a lot of techniques I can incorporate into my artwork such as action lines, cross-shading, dynamic anatomy, foreshortening and playing with white space. Learning these techniques and putting them into practice would help with my artwork significantly.
