For this Sketchbook assignment I went with the Compositional Techniques, Directional Line, Negative Space and Balance Symmetrical. I chose these techniques because I find them to be useful and interesting. I think they will be beneficial to me in the future.

The first sketch is two Koi fish swimming. When reading the Chapter ‘Intro to Composition’, I thought the Directional Lines were interesting as I have never considered using the technique help with an artwork. The way the lines were shown in the chapter was helpful and I now understand how they can be used. Therefore, I used the technique in the first sketch to help me draw the koi fish swimming while also filling the lines.

The next sketch is a Raven on a tree stump, the Raven is placed on the right side of the frame to show Negative Space. Negative Space involves what you leave out, so I kept the left side of the frame empty. I think negative space is interesting because it really shows how least can be better, especially with the artworks by Aubrey Beardsley. I consider myself as a simple person therefore, Negative Space could be helpful to me when I create illustrations in the future.

The last sketch is a silhouette of a man fishing in a lake and land near him. I used Balance Symmetrical in this sketch because it is helps make the sketch unique. Balance Symmetrical arranges the elements equally with an imaginary line. The sketch has the silhouettes on top and bottom to display a reflection, I wanted to show the symmetry in that sense so the sketch can look equal.

Overall, the techniques were helpful to practice in this sketchbook assignment. I hope to continue using them in the future so I can become a better illustrator.
