Writing Intensive Assignments

Before the Writing Intensive requirement was introduced at City Tech, I assigned my students to write about their research in print production. I’ve included two of many excellent samples:

Teri Cork, comparing the printing of several printed editions of The Americans by Robert Frank, wrote a technical piece about the variables that affect fidelity to the original.

For the anniversary of the 9/11 Terrorist attacks, I purchased for the Schwerin Library the iconic 1000-page book, HERE IS NEW YORK, a collection of photographs taken by professionals and spectators alike, assembled into a definitive volume. I brought the book’s editor to meet the students as a guest speaker, and the students talked about their experiences with the book. For his writing project a student collected images of the destroyed fire engines from that tragic day, and told the story of his father, an FDNY truck repairman who fixed them all.
