The Pearl is the name given to COMD’s study center. It comprises five classrooms and five labs on the ground floor of City Tech’s Pearl Building. The facility houses classrooms with equipment and furniture to allow collaboration analogous to industry standards.

It’s the Communication Design department’s home, where students and faculty unite to learn, create, explore, innovate and transform information into meaningful, resonating communication.

Initially, the program had a strong emphasis on print production as a primary communication medium. However, with the industry’s shift towards digital and interactive communication, the program had to adapt. The original plans, one shown below, needed a re-draw to reflect the program’s change in a few short years.

However, the department felt that our students needed a collaborative environment that better reflects their future experience in industry. Based on our comments and suggestions, the architects returned the following suggestions for desk arrangements and the entire facility:
