City Tech has a dedicated office for recruiting new students, while individual departments are responsible for retaining students until graduation. In the COMD department, we actively engage in recruitment efforts alongside the College’s Open Houses and Orientations. We recognize that we are best equipped to convey the unique value of our programs to prospective high school students and aim to attract a diverse and representative student body reflective of New York City.

I utilized assets from a series of images I took during the COMD Department’s renaming celebration to design sketches of marketing materials, including a brochure and a mailer card, both of which will be digitized. My colleagues have also contributed to these efforts by producing videos, organizing portfolio reviews, visiting high schools, and hosting students at The Pearl.

Above are preliminaries of a 3-panel folding brochure and a folding mailer card (BRC).

Students in the COMD Department aim for careers in the diverse creative fields of the tri-state area. However, many start their education without a full understanding of the wide range of opportunities available to them. Thus, maintaining student retention is an ongoing mission carried out by all full-time faculty members through academic advisement and registration drives. We work closely with students to help them choose courses that best align with their academic and career goals.

It’s important to highlight that COMD distinguishes itself from other BFA programs as it is part of the CUNY educational system, which holds high standards for General Education (Gen Ed) courses. The Gen Ed courses our students take, particularly those in the social sciences, directly relate to their life experiences, and the impact of these courses is clearly evident in their projects.

The COMD program places a strong emphasis on assignments and projects that tackle aspects of the human condition. As a result, our students graduate with a heightened awareness of their surroundings and communities.
