The Merriam Webster website defines civil disobedience as the “refusal to obey governmental demands or commands especially as a nonviolent and usually collective means of forcing concessions from the government.” Now, I believe Antigone did engage in civil disobedience, despite her act not fully lining up with this definition of civil disobedience. The king, Creon, is the leader of the government in Thebes and he did demand no one bury Polyneices’ body and Antigone went against that demand. Antigone act was nonviolent since she did not physically harm someone else. While she was not trying to force concessions from the government with her act, the definition did not say the purpose of an act has to be forcing concessions, just implying that is usually the case.

Class Meetings & Times: in person Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4 – 5:15 PM in Namm 403
Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12 – 1:30 PM. I’ll be available through Zoom and will send an invitation via email that you should keep all semester. Try to join my meeting at the start of the hour, not at the end—since I may be talking to other students or have another appointment after the hour is up. If those times don’t work with your schedule, we can schedule a different time. This means you’ll have to schedule an appointment in advance via email. I suggest you have multiple times in mind, since your schedule may not mesh with mine!
