For my U1 writing assignment, I found it easier to write using a speech rather than a letter because my content was not directed at a specific group or people; it was a general topic that could be given to a general audience who could have something to take away or learn from the content. I feel like it wasn’t harder than a traditional academic essay, it just required the same amount of effort that I usually put in. It could be considered easier in some ways, as I didn’t have to adhere to an academic tone, and could instead write my speech like it was a free-write poem or if I was talking out loud. This method of tone was something that I picked up from Young, as it felt like she wasn’t giving a lecture, and instead it felt like she was speaking from her mind. Her being in a TedTalk makes it a bit formal of course, but her sort of easy-going tone really impacted the way I structured my own work. I feel like I learned that my DC’s problems overlapped with the problems that some other DCs or the general population had. I used some things I learned from my COM 1330 Speech class to create my work for this Speech, and when all is said and done, it was a very informative and interesting assignment.
