Low, Harry. “How Japan Has Almost Eradicated Gun Crime.” BBC News, BBC, 6 Jan. 2017, www.bbc.com/news/magazine-38365729.

Summary

This information teaches America that developed countries like Japan doesn’t let it’s people to buy guns freely and easily. Buying guns in japan is like attending college for a degree but in the US; people just buy whichever gun they like from gun shows or gun shops. To buy a gun in Japan, people should attend classes, take exams, pass a shooting-range test with an outstanding result, pass mental health and drug test and lastly, they check whether you have a criminal record or not.

Reflection

I think this info does a good job of comparing the gun violence crisis between two different developed countries. How they both have different practices for buying guns.

Quote

“If you want to buy a gun in Japan you need patience and determination. You have to attend an all-day class, take a written exam, and pass a shooting-range test with a mark of at least 95%. There are also mental health and drug tests. Your criminal record is checked and police look for links to extremist groups. Then they check your relatives too – and even your work colleagues. And as well as having the power to deny gun licenses, police also have sweeping powers to search and seize weapons. Japan has one of the lowest rates of gun crime in the world. In 2014 there were just six gun deaths, compared to 33,599 in the US.”

Summary

This article includes a list of recommendation on how America can prevent gun violence.

Reflection

I agree with the article that by reducing easy access to guns and Insisting on mandatory training and licensing for owners.; America can prevent gun violence because it requires the buyer to be fully responsible for their gun.

Quote: “Insist on mandatory training and licensing for owners. This training should include recurring education to renew permits, with a graduated licensing process at least as stringent as for driver’s licenses. Reduce firearm access to youth and individuals who are at risk of harming themselves or others.”
