Quote #1: “One of the many things I did learn in the investigation process was that university clocks are more at different parts of a university.”

Response: When I started reading this article I was not sure what exactly discourse communities are. As I continued to read, this quote really stood out to me. It is trying to reflect on the concepts of discourse communities. The quote means that all universities or people from different communities are different based on where they live or where they are from. Products from these different communities can differ in price due to discourse communities.

Quote #2: “Discourse communities both influence and are influenced by the larger communities within which they are situated.”

Response: This quote from the article is trying to show due to discourse communities it impacts the way a person believes, values or shares common goals with others due to where they reside. Discourse communities influence people who share a set of discourses, and ultimately impacts the way they communicate about achievements.

3 Discourse Communities I participate In:

  1. ASAP- City Tech

The ASAP program at City Tech allows me and others to have the ability to speak to an advisor at any point throughout the semester. Whenever I need help whether it is a problem with a class, scheduling conflict, problem with a professor, they are there to help students. We have monthly appointments with our advisors where we communicate and make sure students stay on top of things.

2. NSCS- National Society of Collegiate Scholars

I joined the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in my 2nd semester here at City Tech. NSCS offers scholarships for students that achieve well academically. I have received help paying tuition because I joined NSCS. We also have meetings where we speak to other students and others in NSCS. We communicate about our education and I have had the ability to meet new people.

3. Job at a Pizzeria

Working at a pizzeria can make you meet new people where customers then become your friends especially when working in a family business. I work for my family at a pizzeria in Staten Island. We try to provide fast service and good food to try to make all of our customers happy. Communicating with customers is key making sure you make them feel comfortable. We understand the values and purposes and set goals to make all customers happy.
