Shitty First Drafts

5 observation

  1. Different stereotypes people assume to be true about writers.
  2. Everyone struggles with composing their first  draft even when the novels turn out to be on the bestseller list.
  3. Being vulnerable in writing allows you to express better in paper.
  4. Writing process is recurring cycle , no matter how bad your first draft is it can get better by using some of the writing techniques.
  5. Humorous tone in the first paragraph.

Compelling moments

  1. When she discusses how vulnerable like a child allows you to pour out everything that you are meaning to express inn your paper because children has no filter and they say whatever  comes to their mind.
  2. “The next day, I’d sit down, go through it all with a colored pen, take out everything I possibly could, find a new lead somewhere on the second page, figure out a kicky place to end it, and then write a second draft. It always turned out fine, sometimes even funny and weird and helpful. I’d go over it one more time and mail it in.”  i was compelled by her strategies and tactics she used in order to write a second draft.

Question

  1. There were few grammar mistakes so was it purpose to represent the title “Shitty first draft” ?

It,s incredible how chess masters are able to look at a chess board in mid game for as little as five seconds and repeat the position of every piece on the board.

The marathon gold medalist’s time in the 1896 Olympics Games won’t be able to compete in the qualifying round by 1990.

Times Square vs My neighborhood

Times Square: Times square being one of the biggest  tourist magnet makes it arguably the busiest place in New york City. But its not like all other busy places with a large traffic intersection , there more to it . Although times square can be crowded with traffic 24/7 but it has it own beauty towards its profusion. There,s constant flow of spectacular entertainment such as actors wearing superhero costume , advertisement of lavish lifestyle, promotions of upcoming artist , strip clubs, bars, music concerts, clubs, variety  of foods and clothing stores.FullSizeRender
My  neighborhood:   I live in fordham and its been classified as a   “ Ghetto” neighborhood. But its not just “ghetto” it,s also one the most commercial place in New York City  and probably  the busiest place in the bronx. I refer to Fordham as the times square of the Bronx. Fordham road remains crowded up until midnight and just like time square theres  also variety of entertainment where a person can find it delightful to spend some time there. The atmosphere and the diversity of fordham  is nothing like Times Square because you are not going to spot any tourist walking around with their camera or having a fun times with their friends or family instead people who come here is only for jobs and business purpose beside the local people.

Remembering my childhood on the continent of Africa

5 things you observed:

  • The story is based on comparing and contrasting lives of author his friend Hugh’s lives.
  • Hugh’s life has full of events where he exceeded what was reasonable or appropriate.
  • David was civilized with an average normal American life in North Carolina.
  • Hugh story about going on a field trip to a slaughterhouse as a kid, something that would traumatic for kids in author’s society in his childhood shows the difference of their lives.
  • The author was envious about his friend Hugh’s life in the story but it also made him learn to realize someone else is also envious of his life just like the way he is desirous of Hugh’s life. He realized he should be happy and satisfied with his life.

3 Compelling Moments:

1) Hugh’s story about being in a slaughterhouse for a field trip at a young age.

2) I found this story to be compelling because it shows as we grow older we stop being envious of our friend’s childhood and start embracing and understand our own.

3) Hugh going to Ethiopia to live with a beer enthusiast whom his father met at a cocktail party at the age of 14.

Question:

I wonder if Hugh’s childhood story was an exaggeration by the author?

Purpose: The purpose of this story to show the audience that we always want what we don’t or didn’t have even though ours might be better than the one we are envious about.

Shooting an elephant response

While reading “shooting an elephant “by George Orwell I was hooked into it right way as he describes his perspective on British imperialism. Even though he was a British officer himself in the Burma at that time but he was still against the British and he also had certain hatred and guilt towards himself and his empire which I found to be very interesting.
George Orwell used his personal experience with moral difficulty to convey a message to the reader to demonstrate evilness of British imperialism and colonial politics during that time. His story presents a very compelling theme of inner conflict. He conflicts with doing what he believe is right thing to do as a human being or what he should do as imperial British officer. He used many metaphors such as when he was comparing himself to certain objects or things for example he describe himself as a magician who is about to perform a kick.

Mother Tongue by Muthahar Nasim

Mother tongue by Amy Tan was very well written,  the humor throughout the story on her writing kept me engaged and interested and also I found Amy Tan as a very likable person in her  story. Even though personally when i started to read the first paragraph i was so not thrilled to read the rest but as i was reading along i was getting more and more hooked into it. i love the way she describes her relationship with her mom and also the struggle she had to go through because of her mom,s english with specific examples or memories in the story.  The thing  found most compelling about this story is it was very relatable because i been through more or less with my parents what she had go through with her mom. The purpose here was to connect with other asian american that can relate to this situation.

I have a dream response by Muthahar Nasim

While reading the  “ I have a dream speech “by Martin Luther King Jr, I noticed  how he emphasize phrases by repeating at the beginning of a sentence . For example: “ I have a dream” is repeated in eight successive sentence . I also noticed he repeated key theme word such as freedom, nation , we , justice , dream throughout his speech to emphasize on the purpose of the speech.  He also used specific examples to illustrate his argument such as geographical reference in his speech. He used many metaphors as well to allow the the audience to create more concrete emotions and images. For example : the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity”.

The sentence i found the most compelling when he says, “ rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice”  It stuck to me because of the way the metaphor was used in this sentence to deliver a very powerful message.

I wonder how his perspective in racial justice is going to be  in todays society, we are still in a society with racial segregation and injustice.

The purpose here was  to end racial injustice and inequality and create a vision of complete democratic society where everyone is equal.

He grew up in a big family with his parents and with his 2 younger sister and 1 older brother.  His father was a local businessman and his mother was a housewife. Growing up as a kid he was always surrounded by people, since two of uncle and 2 of my aunty lived in the same building with him. Then Muthahar’s father decided to move to United States of a America with the petition his brother filed who’s been living in the us for many years .The purpose was the opportunity to provide his family with better life, education and safety and also his grandmother was also living in the America at that time and she wanted everyone to stay close to each other. Muthahar didn’t have that much struggle adapting into a new life style even though he struggled in the beginning where he struggled to make friends and had trouble keeping up with school. But he went to a prestigious English medium school where he had been taught how to read and write properly in English so it was just matter of time for him to adapt. Having a social circle of friends just flowed into his life habitually and eventually everything about adapting into New York just became just became assimilated .He is currently going to a college in Brooklyn called city tech and doing a part time jobs as a sales expert in paragon sports in Union Square.
