MEETING NOTES

  • Questions/Challenges
  • Activities
    • Did You Know posts
      • Janieca: header is wrapping. Add image attribution & alt text. Nice & short! Tighten up title?
      • Shabaj: add “Open Projects”. Add image(s). Think about the length. Good use of structure.
      • Branding for title – discussion. “DYK:” or “DYK?” or “DYK…”
      • Janieca: “Featured Image” — you can control the size by changing it in the Media Library
      • Use Details block to provide attribution for header image
      • Should each DYK include an action you can take, at the end?
      • Resources:
    • Portfolio:
      • Lyonel
        • Added site icon: Appearance > Customize > site identity (site icon)
        • Added Contact page w/ contact form (activate plugin: Contact Form 7, create form, insert shortcode in page)
          • Could also use Gravity Forms
        • Includes full resume for business
      • Darren
        • Used COMD template
        • Each project has featured image
        • Resume using header structure
        • Internship class materials
        • Images not always clear, especially header images in card format? – let’s see if we can track this down
        • Accessibility: using linked text rather than raw URLs in your content (for screen readers)
        • Discussion about finding royalty free images:
    • Project Updates:
      • Shabaj & Darren:
        • Architecture
          • Multiple images. Grid layout?
          • Many sections are left blank – might want to remove those from template?
          • Could maybe use multiple pages (instead of one very long page)
          • Using empty spaces on both sides – what kind of content would be appropriate there?
        • Business
          • Could use clear navigation.
          • Include many courses – list all their courses. Some had long dropdown menus
          • Could also use grid system for images?
          • Use tables & charts for data & information – how to visually provide this.
          • Tend to use their own personal background images.
        • Dental Hygiene
          • Students use text to present work, use pdfs to present research
          • Relatively few images – maybe 1-2 to show field work
          • Think about ways to display navigation without taking up too much space!
        • Career & Tech Teacher Ed
          • prioritize text.
          • Hierarchy – how to visually present the text without overwhelming with info?
          • Use tables to display data
          • less emphasis on images
        • Darren:
          • Design dept
            • visual showcase – need visually appealing portfolio
            • project documentation
            • multimedia support – image, video, interactive elements
          • Science depts
            • research paper, publications
            • academic acheivement, research contribution
            • lab experience – experiments conducted, results obtained, maybe
          • Psychology
            • case studies, reports
            • should provide platform to present these in visually pleasing m
            • Ethical considerations – need space for this?
        • Departments with internships tend to have a lot of portfolios: business, dental hygiene, (architecture & career TTE have fewer – students leave things blank)
        • Question: Should they focus on departments that use portfolio a lot already? Or help out departments that don’t fully take advantage of portfolios?
        • Question: How many portfolio templates would it make sense to aim for?
      • Saria & Lyonel:
        • Lyonel: Testing themes on Dev, will join Bree,
      • Janieca & Corey:
        • Janieca: Milestones – setting clear dates, making sure assignments & subtasks are clearly defined
  • Practicalities: Google, Dropbox, Asana, time-tracking spreadsheet
    • Shabaj: can they create portfolios on openlabdev? How to test out different templates etc.
      • Jenna: Can only have one portfolio (but can delete/create new one as many times as you like). But for building templates, create a project as if its a portfolio, we can turn that into a template
