MEETING NOTES

  • Questions/Challenges
    • Question for the group: how do we communicate about menu structure/functionality
  • Activities
    • Project Updates: (talking through project outline Google Doc)
      • Shabaj & Darren:
        • Last week began doing dept research (following subtasks). Looked at most commonly used themes, pages.
        • Worked on combining into a draft
          • Will share link to draft in Google Docs
        • Most portfolios, the small subheading people just leave blank.
        • Business dept, don’t use portfolios (just list coursework)
        • Depts with internship have a lot of content, less stuff left blank
        • What about sidebar? Some students used it for links to their other pages.
        • Are people leaving the sample content in, or deleting? Some leave it.
        • Think we should let them create their own pages rather than creating it for them – since they just leave it blank.
        • Have you thought about how to communicate how to use the Portfolio? (should it be within the Portfolio? The buzz? a workshop?).
          • Shabaj: could provide link to Buzz post/help on their profile page?
          • What about using blocks visible only to admins?
      • Saria & Lyonel:
        • Started working on testing themes – working in Google Sheet
        • Set up CBOX-OL – all themes & plugins. Some themes need plugins to work.
        • Created different sites, have all URLS in Google Sheets document.
        • Started tested different templates
        • Astro theme: Really like this theme.
          • Can input a prompt, will generate the whole page using AI. Saved a lot of time! Can choose between different designs.
          • Choose between AI generated website vs standard template
          • Wasn’t working on dev – need to test again
        • Other themes are more complicated to use –
          • Michelle – hard to import demo content (“one-click demo import” — doesn’t work on CBOX)
        • Some have HTML & CSS on the pages
        • Any beginner-friendly themes?
          • Blockland – “we create block themes”
          • Billy – user-friendly for beginners
        • Will continue testing on dev, to ensure functionality
      • Janieca & Corey:
        • Janieca: was talking to a classmate this week. Prof wanted a nested submenu. There’s a tutorial (Janieca will find & share it), but there are no words (just pictures). Seems like a real need! (J building tutorial)
        • Also Categories & Tags — need to present a student perspective of how this works (J building tutorial)
        • Cleaning up menu – how to remove things you’re not using.
        • Ashley did some work on Creating Portfolio (tutorial) – would be great to integrate these.
        • Janieca tutorial plan: was going to include screenshots, highlight particular button.
          • Currently on OpenLab Help we use big red circle/arrow — think about what you want to use
        • How did you (Janieca) learn it? Just tried it. Couldn’t get it using the tutorial — but once started playing around, experimenting, learned how to do it.
        • Fitting these ideas into the larger plan of activities
        • Corey: is there a way to promote the Buzz on the school screens?
          • Jenna has shared in Asana the dimensions/specs for the content.
          • Workflow: you write the post, then create screen content pointing to it.
          • DYK posts could link directly to those posts (more evergreen)
          • What’s the Buzz — use screens to point people to the Buzz
          • Janieca uploaded some sample screen designs for What’s the Buzz – in dropbox
          • Has overall layout, playing with bee buzzing through
        • Ashley: Belen put together a Style Guide for the Buzz
          • Ashley will try to track down the files & share
        • Janieca shared some mockups of screens
        • Screens: jpg or png, or powerpoint, or mp4
        • Can reach out to Prof. Garistege (sp?) for template for COMD screens (could use it for other screens too – same size)
      • Goal: Can we get a DYK post up on the Buzz (so we can feature in the Spotlight) — for week after next?
        • J & Ashley set up template guidelines (it’s in the folder) – still making some final tweaks
        • Submissions – is there a submission process? Posts should be prescanned, scheduled for a publication.
        • Workflow: authors create their own DYK posts on the Buzz, but they are reviewed before publishing?
          • Jody: Maybe interns / guest bloggers write the DYK posts
          • also how do we solicit ideas from the community? People could submit ideas. Could have a link “Contribute to the Buzz” – to Gravity Forms – could collect info for various types of post like DYK, reviewing someone’s Portfolio, etc.
      • Last semester, interns each wrote a post about another person’s Portfolio. Jody will share a template for this. Then we can Spotlight each Portfolio.
      • Ashley: excel sheet w/ departments / areas / etc at City Tech.
      • Final Presentations: Tuesday May 14th, 12-1pm.
        • Sounds like everyone is available 11am-1pm.
      • Janieca: question about posts for What’s the Buzz —
        • DYK: Categories & Tags, Menus
        • Side post before Spring Break: Spring Break safety PSA(?)
          • Consider response/call to action: What are you doing on your spring break?
        • Corey: something like “Tips for success in school” post
