Week 4 : Discussion

An article that I decided to write about that can reflect the media and the world is about Poverty and Homelessness. The article talks about how the population itself has increased to more poverty over the years leaving towns and complexes to become one of the most dangerous areas, it’s a topic that’s not furtherly discussed often, and the percentages keep going up. Homelessness takes its origins from increased urbanization and gaps in social welfare. The reality of what brings one to the streets and the circumstances that lead to chronic homelessness is infinitely more complex. Poverty lacks social and family support,  and most important failed government policy leading to civil rights issues. For example, the LGBT communities who are living in poverty have no ability to absorb financial situations. People who are in poverty can be affected by various mental and health conditions such as psychiatric disease, mental and physical disabilities,  consequences of drug and alcohol abuse, and violence. Despite the many challenges, there are new roots in the causes of homelessness and the associated health and social consequences. These strategies included supportive housing, community empowerment, and mental/health strategies. Improving homelessness is important, eventually leading to poverty, it is beneficial to communities and systems, there are many websites and online applications that allow people to donate to the poor and give a helping hand, at this point society has relied on technology to the duties for them, we must look on how far it takes us.

Here is the article about  Poverty and Homeless Civil Rights issues and the effect on LGBT communities:

Week 3 The Media’s Impact

I have decided to research a news article showing how the media is doing its job, serving as a social watchdog, and can encourage public discussion on this important topic.

Dylan Voller, a victim of false accusations on the media.

How the media is doing its job: The media can have a good and bad impact on the nation and the media itself. in this article, it demonstrates how this New York Times article shares information on how a media news outlet in Australia  ABCTV Program “Four Corners” exposes an image of Dylan Voller who was then detained in a chair wearing a spit hood and their also facebooks post on their page caused various false accusations. The media’s job is to inform the people and update them on information not just about social problems but also about the media themself such as ABCTV.

**More info about the case: Dylan Voller ends ups suing Facebook for the false accusations instead of him confronting the commenters since that facebook probably was not aware of this situation.**

Serving as a social watchdog: Now in days people can post hateful or disrespectful comments and get blocked temporarily, even whoever is in charge of the facebook page you can monitor the hateful comments.

Voller states that he did not ask Facebook to pull down the comments on their page before the lawsuit since they should take responsibility for the comments even though they might have been aware of it. Therefore the media outlets are second thinking about what content they share and limiting the engagement with the readers.

Now facebook included a new feature that allows the page administrator to turn off the comments on the post and can still be sued for comments left under a post. But Australia states that section 230 of the communication Decency Act holds the platform automatic immunity from what people say in third-party comments. Therefore it apparently is not the media’s fault either.

Encouraging public discussion on the topic: This topic can be discussed furthermore and if third parties should take accountability for third-party comments since they are only sharing the media or should they be responsible for the reaction of their audience. Media such as Facebook can be a great influence on a large number of their audience and releasing false information can also affect them.

Media Doing it’s Job

In the last weeks there has been surprising media coverage emerging from our “country’s” southern boarder. I do expect that maybe a number of students have chosen this article as well so I will try to keep my response unique. Since the Biden administration has taken office the crisis at the Rio Grande has been swept under the rug. However, journalists at the NY times have given us a glimpse of the mayhem. What seems to already be a now iconic photo, is a boarder patrol ranger whipping a desperate Haitian migrant is what were greeted with. Thousands of migrants can be seen in videos receiving humanitarian aid in large clusters of what looks like covid cesspools’. What the journalist did a good job in is exposing our government and shining a light on President Biden. Biden voters had got him into office with VP Kamala Harris with the intention that our boarders will remain a pair of open arms to those who seek refuge. But now we see President Biden is using a public health rule that was put in place by the Trump administration to dispose of migrants at our doorstep. This piece of information is great journalism as it exposes something about our government that Biden voters will be very displeased by. Not all migrants have been turned away but it’s examples of good journalism like this that gives the public a sense of transparency during a humanitarian crisis.
