Each week you will need to respond to two questions posted. Your response should be a minimum of 150 words for both questions. You should also include at least one response to your fellow students. The responses are a requirement for participation part of your grade.
Question 01 –
Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?
Question 02 –
When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.
Question 01 –

Triangles, on average, hold the least amount of area. Less area means you can fit more in the same amount of space as square with the same measurements. The more you fit, the more detail you can create. They can also be various sizes and can be the basis for other shapes. So really a triangle is any shape you want it to be. If it were a square or rectangle, it would just be a form of various right angles and appear pixelated. A rhombus is just two triangles stuck together.
Question 02 –
When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.
Multiple fills on an object lets you build complexity without making the overall layer tab as complex. Its all contained on the appearance layer and is just as easy to manipulate.
Adding multiple fills to something like say a flower, which would ordinarily contain a lot of colour and repetition, a more easier object to work with now that your layer tabs aren’t filled with multiple objects of the same shape.
Answer:1
Triangles create a more geometric and uniform aesthetic in low poly art. They align with the angular nature of low poly design, providing a consistent and stylized appearance. The use of four-sided shapes may result in a less uniform and more organic look. It might add softer curves that could break from the sharp, angular aesthetic of conventional low poly portraits.
Answer:2
Multiple fills are useful to highlight particular characteristics inside a single shape. For instance, When designing a T-shirt in Illustrator, multiple fills can be applied. A primary fill for the fabric color and an additional fill for a pattern or texture (e.g. stripes, dots, or a logo). This approach allows for the detailed representation of both the base color and the distinctive design elements on the T-shirt.
Question 01 –
Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?
Low poly should only be made of triangles because it gives a more distinct and abstract look than with other polygons. The angles in the triangles are more pointy and could have different angles and sizes to fit in the portrait making. With other polygons, there would have too many sides to fit into certain details of the portrait
Question 02 –
When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.
Using multiple fills can add a variety of texture and depth into vector art. This can create a more 3D effect on 2D images
I think triangles were a good choice for the portraits because it gave it a consistent and clean look giving it a more appealing look. 4 sided shapes are more inconsistent because its so many of them .
It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design when wanting more of a realistic feel to it. When designing food to make it look more 3 dimensional adding multiple fills can be beneficial to actually look real like a photo. It helps give depth and texture to a design resulting in better work.
Question 01 –
Using only triangles in a low poly portrait ensures that each shape can sit flat without any weird bending or warping—something that’s riskier with more complex polygons. If you went with four-sided shapes or quads, you might lose some of the angular sharpness that gives low poly its charm. Plus, quads could make the shading more uniform and less dynamic, possibly making the portrait look flatter and less detailed.
Question 02 –
Adding multiple fills to a shape is like layering up flavors in a dish. Take a T-shirt design, for example. If you want that cotton to look real with shadows, highlights, and maybe a pattern, layering different fills can make it pop off the screen. You could have a base fill for the main color, a gradient fill for the shadow, and another for the sheen on top. It’s all about getting that depth and texture just right.
Question 01 –
Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?
Because triangles are the simplest and most regular polygonal shapes, they can result in clean and visually appealing designs. When an image is broken down into triangles, the resulting low-polygon portraits tend to have a more consistent and predictable appearance. Many artists and designers find that low poly portraits made up of triangles have a unique and visually interesting quality.
Question 02 –
When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.
Adding multiple fills to specific shapes in your design can be useful when you want to create depth, texture, or special effects in your artwork. This technique is often used in vector design software like Adobe Illustrator to enhance the visual impact of various objects.
For example: if your tree has flowers or fruits, you can use multiple fillers to give them a more detailed and realistic look. For flowers, you can use one to fill in the color of the petals, another to fill the stamen and pistil, and a third to fill the highlights. For fruits, different fillings can represent the color and texture of the fruit.
Answer 1 – Low poly portraits are used because they offer a minimalist and provide better color shading. If they were designed using four-sided shapes it would complicate the design and make it less true to the low poly style.
Answer 2 – When it comes to multi[le fill in the design, like on a t-shirt it can be useful because it adds depth and detail to it. This allows for the fill to act as the main fabric, graphic print, highlights, and shadows on the t-shirt.
A. I can only share my personal experience with crafting a Low Poly Portrait. The use of triangles allowed me to establish the facial structure even before adding color. For instance, when working on my cheeks and the arch of my eyebrows, I utilized the triangle points to depict the slight bulge of my eyelids.
B.In our project, I created a shirt, and to make it look realistic, I had to work with blue and white colors to add shadows and create the wrinkles in the fabric.
Question 01 –
Low poly portraits should be made up of triangles rather than other polygons because it give the illusion of dimension and shape. It is amazing how multiple connecting triangles can actually resemble us simply by creating them and adding color. If we use a four-sided shape rather than triangles it may look too flat and not as realistic.
Question 02 –
To add multiple fill you have to go to appearance and click on fill then click on the + icon on the bottom right. Adding multiple fills to a particular shape in a design will be useful because instead of having multiple layers, it could be easier to use the appearance palette. Although a bit tricky you can create flowers by using multiple fills and effects.
Hi Bonnie,
You did a great job explaining how to use the appearance panel for creating multiple fills.
Hello Bonnie, I agree with you that a four-sided shape rather than triangles looks more uneven and not real than a triangle.
Hey Steph, I agree with your explanation but If you had a choice. Which shape would you choose?
Hi Stephanie, I like how you mention triangles create a stylized abstract look and it is pretty cool how closely it resembles us.
