Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Hercules Emile Anthony Reid. Interesting fact about me is that I have two first names. I am a NY native and have lived from the Bronx to Upstate NY and now Teaneck NJ. I am a transfer student from Delaware State University where I studied Psychology. The school became too expensive to attend and my heart was not in to psychology as I had thought. After a class in high school I discovered a passion for the architecture field. Transferring to City Tech, I choose the best option for me to succeed. I am in love with sports. I have participated in soccer, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and track and field in my life time. Track and Field I loved and succeeded in the most. I planned to run for City Tech only to find the cancellation of the program. So instead I plan to take up Karate and Boxing along with perfecting my new craft and love Architecture.  By the way I am trying to make new friends.

Hello everyone, my name is Cristian Morales. I am Guatemalan and Salvadorian, I live in Rego Park Queens. I have a variety of hobbies. For example I am a very athletic individual, I play baseball, football, handball, soccer and volleyball. I am also a lover of the musical arts, mostly the rebellious rock kind, but I am not the rebellious type.

I wanted to be an architect since I began my high school career. I was, and still am, fascinated with the ideas architects from the past and  present had in their designs, I thought to myself “I could do the same as them” and so here I am attending City Tech. This is my first semester in City Tech. I expected life in college to be the most stressful time of my life, but so far I am enjoying every day of it. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and hope that we will make this college experience a good one.

Open Lab Assignment #1: Introduction

(categorize and post under introduction)

Essay due Tuesday, September 4 by 12 midnight.                                                      Comments due Thursday, September 6 by 6 am

Tell us about yourself. Why do you want to study architecture? What meaning does architecture have for you? Some topics you may want to include: where were you born, what languages do you speak, how long have you been at City Tech, did you attend other colleges, what is your reaction to college, do you have any experiences with architecture or construction. So let me begin…

My name is Barbara Smith Mishara. I prefer to be called Professor Mishara. I am a native New Yorker and, although I lived in Manhattan for many years, I consider myself a native Brooklynite. I’m a registered architect with a specialization in historic preservation. I earned my architectural degrees from New York Institute of Technology and Columbia University. I tried several careers, but I was never satisfied; I was not using all my abilities. Then I found architecture! I love the complexity and challenge of combining so many elements into one project. I truly believe what I talk about in class. Architecture is not only design or only construction, but a synthesis of “firmness, commodity and delight”. I also relish my role as teacher. I enjoy sharing my love and knowledge of architecture with my students. I look forward to our collaboration this semester.

WELCOME to ARCH 1121

Congratulations! if you are reading this you have successfully found Open Lab and our class web site. Remember you must register as a member of Open Lab (follow the directions on the first page) and as a member of this class (see directions under help). You must be a participant in the class to post assignments and comments. If you have any problems or questions, contact the Open Lab staff. They are extremely responsive. Of course, you can also e-mail me (BMishara@citytech.cuny.edu).

We will be using this Open Lab site and a Blackboard site. This may be confusing, so let me try to explain. On this Open Lab site we will be writing about architecture, thinking and forming ideas, interacting with one another, and eventually posting final projects. This is an active site. On the other hand, the Blackboard site will be passive. I will post lectures and homework assignments for you to download. The two sites are necessary because there is not sufficient memory in Open Lab for all the graphics and images we architects love to use.
