A city can be described in many ways but we all have a central idea of what a city is. A city is a large settlement area for people, which have complex systems of design. A city is a civilization where the people who reside in it come together and develop these complex systems of designs in ways that are beneficial to its residents. The design of cities includes paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. Keven Lynch in his article, “The City Image and Its Elements”, gives us a good description of each of these.

Paths can be described as the channels along which someone moves through. It can be streets, walkways, transit lines, canals, and railroads. Edges are the linear elements that are not considered as paths by people. They are the separations between two phases like shores, railroad cuts, and walls. They are also the later references not coordinate axes. Districts are the various medium to large sized sections of the city. It is always recognized from the inside but can also be an exterior reference if it is seen from the outside. Nodes are points or spots in a city through which people can enter. It is usually primary junctions, a crossing of paths or places of break in transportation. Nodes can gain importance by being condensed by the use of a hang out corner. Landmarks are a different type of reference points. In the case of landmarks, people do not enter within them because they are external. Landmarks are defined as physical objects like buildings, signs, store, or a well known tourist attraction. Some landmarks can be local like trees, store fronts, and other urban details that are frequently used as clues of identity to become familiar with the setting.

Assignment #1: Introduction

Hey folks…I’m from Guyana, South America. I moved to Brooklyn when I was about fourteen, where I attended high school. In the fourth year of high school, due to the fact I was the only artsy student in my class, I got a lot of support from my teachers. They helped me find lot of extracurricular activities like some art & design classes, volunteer endeavors and an internship. I initially was drawn to the graphic design & advertising field but I was not satisfied with that being my only skillset, so after finishing two year program of arts and advertising, I moved over to the architecture program, because I was always drawn to technical drawing. I eventually want to become an environmental graphic designer, and at a later stage I want to become a teacher. As far as my personal life goes I still volunteer and I always try to do things in the arts/design field.

Assignment 1 – SELF introduction_Moniruz_Zaman_ARCH.1121

My given name is Moniruz Zaman and I am currently in my 2nd semester at city tech. I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens. I was a straight ‘A’ student throughout elementary and junior high school, but became a bit of the opposite during high school. After graduating high school on 2011, I decided to take a break from school and go on a vacation to visit my parent’s native country, Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is a poor 3rd world country where many people go through many hardships, for example, in many places like small villages and towns, people build buildings with man power only, without any use of technology. I never saw this type of living conditions, which is why it fascinated me. AT the end of the vacation I realized that although the country is poor and conditions are hard, their architecture still comes out very nice. It was shocking how nice a 3 story building could be made without any machinery. This is what sparked my interest in Architecture.
