City Definition

Ana Perez

After reading all the articles that were distributed in class, this was my  conclusion  about what a city is: A city is a geographical space with an economic system where services and industries predominate.

A city is able to fend for itself. The example of the first city or as the article said “The first true city” is found in Mesopotamia. For its  convenient  location  and  access to rivers they were able to develop their own form of architecture and agriculture . Mesopotamia  was a civilization  and  according  to  the  introduction  “Cities are civilization.” The city life gives birth to writing, economic systems and government.

Geographically,  a  city  is  composed of different elements. In the article, “The City Image and Its Elements”,   Kevin   Lynch  points  out  five   of  the  mos t important: Paths, Edges, Districts, Nodes, and Landmarks. From a social perspective, I find it interesting how Lewis Mumford presents the city as the stage of a play and the population as the actors in  which politics, art and education are the factors that make the play more richly significant.

It was the place where laws, deeds, records, treaties, etc. were kept. It was commissioned by Q. Lutatius Catulus and designed by Cornelius in 78 BC and restored in 46 AD by Claudius. A modern day equivalent to the roman Tabularian would be the various archive buildings we have today such as the Municipal Archives and the New York State Archives.

Downtown Rome- “The Rostra”

Ana Perez

The Rostra was a large platform built in the city of Rome that stood during the republican and imperial periods. Magistrates, politicians, advocates and other orators spoke to the assembled people of Rome from this highly honored and elevated spot. Typically, a speaker’s platform is called a tribunal, but after Duilius won Rome’s first major naval victory against Antium in 338 BCE, six bronze prows of enemy ships were attached to the front of the speaker’s platform as trophies; the Latin for prows is rostra, and the name became used for the entire structure.

Modern Equivalent: Tribune, platform, stage or any place from which a speech can be prominently made.
