This picture is absolutely beautiful to me. Matthew Pillsbury was playing with shutter speed and lighting in this series of pictures called ‘New York City Slowed Down By Long Exposure Photography’. It has numerous elements of composition which were discussed in class. There is ‘Figure To Ground’ and ‘Frame Within A Frame’. It also follows ‘The Rule Of Thirds’ as well as ‘Fill The Frame’. Color is always wonderful but I feel that it takes a truly gifted eye to make magic with black and white.

This is a beautiful photograph. it really conveys the feeling of being out on a summer night.
I think it roughly follows the Rule of Thirds in that the subject is in the bottom third of the photo. the figure ground relationship is important in how the lights and water set off the dark figure.
A good deal of the frame is empty though. This isn’t a value judgement. just a fact. it is also not an example of a frame within a frame. The photograph itself is one frame. something in the photograph usually a window or door needs to direct our attention to the main subject. if the monument framed the main subject, I would say yes its an example of a frame within a frame. But it doesn’t.
