Weeks 10 & 11 checklist

Tuesday, April 4 to Monday, April 17

Test #2

  • Tuesday, April 4 – Chapter 5: Linear Second Order Equations
  • Plan to arrive early (you may have seen in the news that lower Manhattan is expected to be very busy on Tuesday; leave extra time for your commute, especially if you’re passing through there).

  • Part 2 due Monday, April 24
  • Sign up (for a specific textbook question) here
  • Instructions here

WeBWorK

  • Complete ONE of the following sets, due Monday, April 17
    • Applications of Second Order Equations-Springs Undamped
    • Applications of Second Order Equations-Springs Damped
    • Applications of Second Order Equations-RLC Circuit
  • Hint for WeBWorK Springs sets: on page 268, your textbook uses the following sign convention “We define y to be the displacement of the object from its equilibrium position (Figure 6.1.1), measured positive upward… . If the spring is stretched then $L > 0$ and $F_s > 0$, so the spring force is upward, while if the spring is compressed then $L < 0$ and $F_s < 0$, so the spring force is downward.” Not everyone uses this sign convention. The opposite sign convention is to consider the length of the spring relative to its equilibrium position. That is, when the spring gets longer, that is considered the positive direction. If WeBWorK is not accepting your answer, try changing just this sign.

Spring break

  • Wednesday, April 5 to Thursday, April 13
  • See you on Tuesday, April 18!
