Towards the end of my senior year of high school, I reminisced about the days I used to cook for my family and see them enjoy and compliment my creativity. I considered the opportunity to pursue a career in  culinary arts not because I am able to cook but take the chance of finding my dream job through college . I made my decision to join City Tech as a Hospitality Management major as the initial step to my career. As a college freshman, I know that is up to me to keep myself motivated and continue no matter the obstacles that come my way and make my time in college worth my effort towards graduation.

After graduating from Midwood High School, I now attend New York City College of Technology to pursue my passion for baking. I am enrolled in Hospitality Management to gain knowledge and to develop skills that are important to become a successful pastry chef. One of the redeeming qualities I have is being able to soak up as much knowledge as I possibly can like a sponge. I am willing to learn and to grow from my mistakes. During my sophomore year of high school, I worked as a tutor assistant. Now, I am currently working at Subways to develop my communication skills and customer service. Both of my jobs involved communicating and delegating tasks which are important in the hospitality industry. By learning from my mentors in both of my jobs and from my professors, I hope to emulate their footsteps to become a pastry chef.

After I graduated from High school with a concentration in Dual Language and Asian Studies, I could not figure out what I was really interested in or passionate about. At the time when I applied to a college, my first choice was Baruch College, and the major I choose was accounting. The reason for that is during my time in high school, my friend and I joined many different workshops that my friend and I joined was a workshop related to accounting. Before that I heard a lot of information about accounting but when I actually joined it, I found out that I’m not really interesting in accounting. That didn’t matter much because I later found out that Baruch College rejected me and my application. But when that happened I was a still a little bit upset. But since I’m an optimistic girl I didn’t let that set me back. I decided not to dwell on my career path because who knows what the future will bring. The main goal now is for me to find something to do that makes me happy. I’m still feeling things out and when it’s time to choose a major that I feel strongly about, I will then decide on the college I want to attend. I still can’t believe that I chose a major like Hospitality Management, in a college like City Tech because I don’t have prior experience in cooking or working at hotels. But I do hope that I can learn more about it and increase my knowledge of it in the upcoming school year.

Growing up was quite an experience. Because both of my parents worked in the food industry, I gained the knowledge and experience of how a restaurant runs. I learned various skills, such as restaurant cleanliness, customer service and managing money. In the future, I hope to master these skills, and learn other skills that gravitate toward my dream of opening my very own bakery.

My determination and drive to be a chef started with my 2011 visit to L’Ecole in Lower Manhattan. L’Ecole is the restaurant in which students and teachers of the French Culinary Institute cook for customers.  While enjoying some roast duck breast with a side of fingerling potatoes drizzled with white truffle oil an opportunity struck.  I was able to walk into the L’Ecole kitchen when I was done eating my food.  I stood in the middle of that kitchen and told myself, “I never want to do anything else, but create great food.” Now that I am in City Tech majoring in Hospitality Management I am only getting closer to my dream job and I cannot wait to see what the future has in store for me.

I am a determined, hardworking, and professional student. The hospitality industry encompasses all of my passions and strengths into one field. My lifetime goal is to become an international food critic, travel the world, and have my own wine. My short term goals are to understand each sector of hospitality to help me develop the knowledge I need to get ahead in the working environment.
